THE HOKIES SHOOT themselves in the foot by hitting only 21 percent of their first-half shots in a 79-63 loss to Michigan.
Virginia Tech could not overcome 21 percent field-goal shooting in the first half and fell to Michigan 79-63 on Friday in the first round of the Wahine Classic in Honolulu.
Freshman centers Meg Hunter and Kim Seaver picked up two quick fouls each as Tech (1-1) struggled to get the ball inside. Michigan (4-0) capitalized by building a 17-point halftime advantage as the Hokies misfired repeatedly from the perimeter.
Tech rallied, closing to 47-39 with 11:30 remaining, but couldn't get any closer after intermission. Hunter led Tech with 17 points and Seaver had 15. Sherry Banks (William Byrd) added 13 points and four assists. Renee Maitland had nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Hokies meet the loser of Friday's late game between Pitt and host Hawaii at 5:30 p.m. today in the consolation bracket.
Stacey Thomas had 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolverines, who dominated the boards 56-36. Tiffany Willard scored 11 points and Pollyana Johns added 10.
Michigan meets the Pitt-Hawaii winner today.
