BAINARD, Bonnie Sue Elliot, 51, of 4523 Water Oak Drive, Lake Wylie, S.C., died Friday, November 29, 1996, at her residence. She was a native of Blacksburg, Va., daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Hilton Elliot. She was a waitress and founder of the Lake Wylie Cancer Fund. Survivors include her husband, Dean Bainard; two brothers, Harold Jack Elliot of Christiansburg, Va., and Claude Curtis Elliot of Woodlawn, Va .; three sisters, Audrey Reed and Florence Reed of Blacksburg, and Mary Gardner of Spotsylvania, Va.; eight nephews, and six nieces. The family will receive friends at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia, N.C., from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. A reception will follow at the Windmill Restaurant in Lake Wylie, S.C. BOYLE, Sadie M. Ruggles, (Mrs. John W., Sr.), 89, of Roanoke, passed away Friday afternoon, November 29, 1996. She was born on April 22, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Louise Krieger Ruggles; her father, George Henry Wheeler Ruggles, and her siblings, Harry Dale Ruggles, Maud Lilla Ruggles, Edgar and George Edwin Ruggles. She was a graduate of Bay Ridge High School for Girls in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a student of Professor James Whitton in Dance, and taught dance in the 1920s, also in Brooklyn. She was a Junior Supervisor in the Engineering Department of American Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York City and helped to lay out the original trunk lines for the City in the 1920s and 1930s. She was a devoted member of Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, the Spade and Trowel Garden Club, the Thursday Morning Music Club and the Roanoke Rose Society. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Boyle Lemon and William J. Lemon of Roanoke; her son and daughter-in-law, John Weldon Boyle Jr. and Susan G. Boyle of Smith Mountain Lake; her grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Lemon Ludwig, William Tucker Lemon, Stephen Weldon Lemon, John Weldon Boyle III, Deborah Helen Boyle Aschoff and William Michael Boyle, and her great-grandchildren, Catherine Kirkbride Ludwig, Caroline Wilson Ludwig, Allison Marie Lemon, Laura Barbara Lemon and Tyler Jacob Bui Lemon. She is also survived by her first cousin and dear companion, Dorothy Havecker Tamraz, and 13 beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will b e held at Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke at 12:30 p.m. Monday, December 2, 1996, with Dr. William Rupert Klein and Dr. Julianne Hollingsworth officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, December 1, 1996. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Second Presbyterian Church Fund, the Shedd Montessori School or the Roanoke Ballet Theatre.

BURNETT, John Dent, (``J. D.""), 60, of Pearisburg, died Saturday, November 30, 1996, in Carilion-Giles Memorial Hospital. Mr. Burnett was born in Carroll County on November 21, 1936, and was a son of the late John D. Burnett Sr. and Enola Whittington Burnett. He was an employee of Hoechst-Celanese Corporation. Mr. Burnett was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg and had 37 years of perfect Sunday School attendance. He was initiated into the Dixie Lodge #202 A.F.&A.M. of Fries on October 13, 1961. He was raised to Master Mason on January 27, 1962. He transferred to Giles Lodge #106 A.F.&A.M. on February 21, 1964, and held dual membership in both lodges. He served as Master of Giles Lodge #106 four times: 1977, 1981, 19 94 and 1995. He was District Deputy Grand Master in 1978. He joined the Scottish Rite Body in April 1964. He joined the Kazim Shrine Temple of Roanoke A.A.O.N.M.S. on April 25, 1964. He was Potentates Ambassador, became a member of Royal Arch Chapter #29 on April 16, 1985, and had received his K.C.C.P. Degree. He joined the Blacksburg Commandry #32 on September 24, 1985, joined Galax Eastern Star Chapter #165 on January 11, 1961, a charter member of the Kazim Misfits Clown Unit. He joined the Pearis Chapter #124 on January 17, 1973, and served as Worthy Patron from 1973 to 1977 and 1988 to 1991, and was presently serving as Grand Representative of Ohio for the General Grand Chapter of Virginia. He is survived by one brother, Kenneth W. Burnett of Galax; one niece, Keli Meredith of Hillsville, and one great-nephew, Kenley Meredith of Hillsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Pearisburg First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Freddrick Long and the Rev. Judith Long officiating. A Masonic graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Cemetery in Carroll County. Friends may call at Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, where there will be an Eastern Star Memorial service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, Greenville Unit.

BUSKELL-CAMPBELL, Edith Lyle Russell 80, of Greenville, Tenn.; formerly of Tazewell County, Va, died Friday at the Laughlin Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Ms. Buskell-Campbell was the daughter of the late Joseph & Hattie Russell. Survivors include her husband: The Rev. (Ret.) A.W. Campbell; a son, Kelly I. Buskell (wife Jan) of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Lois Buskell-Chambers of Christiansburg, Va; and Zelma Buskell-Bales of Harpers Ferry, W Va.; five stepsons, Bill Campbell of Lakeland, Fla; Bob, Bud, and Ronnie Campbell of Columbia, S.C.; Dean Campbell of Somerset, Ky; four step-daughters, Helen Smith of Bristol, Va; Darlene Hicks of Bristol, Tenn; Ann Hubbard of Greenville, Tenn; and Arlene Jones of Afton, Tenn.; nine grandchildren (22 step grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, 29 step great-grandchildren, one brother, B.S. Russell of Orlando, Fla.; one nephew, David Russell of Orlando, Fla.; two nieces, Hattie Jones of Murfreesboro, N.C. and Shirley Marshall of Atlanta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kelly M. Buskell of Richlands, Va; two daughters, Mary O. Buskell of Richlands, Va; and Wanda Kress of Kingsport, Tenn; and one brother, E.S. Russell of Bluefield, Va. Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home will arrange for the family to receive her many friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening in the Horse Creek Church of God. The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 with the The Rev. Melvin Shelton officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Monday morning at Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, Va for a brief graveside service. Active pallbearers will be her sons. CARR, Nelson Francis, 58, of Copper Hill, died Saturday, November 30, 1996 in Lewis-Gale Hospital. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Nelson Carr. Surviving is his wife, Iris Nichols Carr; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Christine Carr, Michael S. Carr, all of Copper Hill, Troy W. Carr and his fiancee, Jenny Whittle of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Tara Dawn Carr, Alanna Fawn Carr and Isiah S. Carr; four brothers, Walter Carr, George Carr, Eugene Carr, all of Roanoke, Raymond Carr of Baltimore, Md.; and a very special nephew, Keith Carr. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Dale Bowman officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. CHAMBERLAIN, Doris L., 95, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 30,1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winthrop W. Chamberlain and a son, Norman G. Chamberlain. Mrs. Chamberlain was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard and Carol Chamberlain of Moneta, Winthrop W., II and Patricia Chamberlain of La ke Almanor, Calif., Mrs. Norman (Elaine) Chamberlain of Gray, Maine; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Roanoke United Methodist Home (1009 Old Country Club Road, Roanoke, Va. 24017) or a favorite charity. CONNER, Joshua Eric, 14, of Hampton, departed from this earthly life on Saturday, November 30, 1996, to be with his Lord and Savior. Joshua was a member of Floyd Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Genova H. Conner. Born in San Angelo, Texas, the loved son of Jay and Diane W. Conner, he had resided in Hampton for the last three years. In addition to his parents, he leaves behind two adoring siblings, Jacob Eli Conner and Julianne Elizabeth Conner of Hampton. He also is survived by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Mary Weddle of Floyd, and his paternal grandfather, James Early Conner of Check. CONNER, Theodra Blankenship , 82, of Salem, formerly of Copper Hill, died Saturday, November 30,1996 in a Roanoke hospital. Surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Bill Graham, Shirley and Paul Graham, Reba and Arthur Spangler, Lillian and Ralph Goode, all of Roanoke, Dianne and David Brown, Salem; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Garland Blankenship of Martinsville; two sisters, Fannie Conner, Rocky Mount, R. DRAPER, Gladys Slaughter, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, November 29, 1996, after a brief struggle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Shirley R. Draper of Roanoke; a son, S. Randolph Draper and his wife Pamela Poland Draper of Roanoke; a daughter, Jo Lynn Draper McClung and her husband William A. McClung Jr. of Roanoke; four grandsons, Stuart Randolph Draper, Travis Robert Draper, Lucius Randolph Woody and Robert Draper Woody of Roanoke; a brother, John Garland Slaughter of Richmond; a sister, Thelma Arthur of Richmond, and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Thomas O'Dell officiating. Private interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. FISHER, Mary Ethel Chandl er, 91, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, November 30, 1996 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Fisher and a son, Charles E. Fisher. She is survived by a daughter, Frances F. McCoy, Christiansburg; two granddaughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Dan Myers of Christiansburg, Vicki and John Bottoms of Amhurst; two grandsons, Ray Fisher, Roanoke, Patrick Fisher, Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law, Jolene M. Fisher, Roanoke; five great-grandchildren, Emily and Tyler Myers, Christiansburg, Michael and Travis Pearl, Amhurst, Kristin Fisher, Roanoke; a brother, Robert W. Chandler, DeLane, Fla.; a special friend, Keith Hall; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. FORBES, Signora Eaves, 69, of Roanoke, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 1996. She was born in Radford to the late James W. and Rachel A. Eaves. She was preceded in death by her son, Charlie J. Forbes Jr. Mrs. Forbes was a loyal and dedicated member of the High Street Baptist Church, where she was active in several organizations, including the Deaconess Board and the Cathedral Choir. She served in many capacities and never failed to serve with dedication and commitment. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss are her husband, Charlie J. Forbes Sr.; three sisters, Edna V. Lawton, Roanoke, Elizabeth Manns, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mary Mitchell, Meade, W.Va.; three brothers-in-law, John T. Lawton and James Emerson, both of Roanoke, Monroe Green, Boones Mill; two godchildren, Monroe Green Jr. and Rose Andrews; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Emerson, Roanoke, Vivian Eaves, Radford, and Hattie Parker, New River; two very devoted girls, Elizabeth Pratt, Roanoke, and Margaret Keeton, Greensboro, N.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. HALE, Howard Frank, 84, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, November 30, 1996 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Berneda Hale of Blacksburg; two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley Meredith of Blacksburg, and Arlean and Don Lambert of Maplewood, N.J.; one foster daughter, Dolly Huff of Christiansburg; six grandchildren and their spouses, Dale Justin and Teresa Echols, Dennis Scott and Patricia Echols, both of Blacksburg, David Lambert and Jacob Lambert of Maplewood, N.J., Decota R. and Amy Huff of Blacksburg, Cathy E. and Ben Williams of Christiansburg; three sisters, Pauline Alls, Pearl Hawley and Leona Faw, all of Blacksburg; three brothers, Clifford ``Pete"" Hale of North Carolina, William Hale and Warren Hale, both of Blacksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. HICKS, Carol Thornsbury, 58, of Charlotte, N.C., died Friday, November 29, 1996, at her residence. A native of Roanoke, Va., Carol was the daughter of the late Marguerite Duncan and Oscar M. Thornsbury. She was a member of Forest Hill Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. Survivors include her husband of 40 years, John E. Hicks; son, Michael S. Hicks and granddaughter Whitney; daughter, Kathy L. Huntley and granddaughter Kalyn; brothers, Oscar Thornsbury and wife Barbara, Billy Duncan and wife Judy, and Arthur Lynn Duncan and wife Cary, all of Roanoke; a sister, Shirley McDowell of Lynchburg, Va., and numerous nephews and nieces. A memorial service to celebrate Carol's life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church, 7224 Park Road, Charlotte. Visitation will be at the church immediately following the service. HOLLINS, Bessie Chandler, 72, of Cedar Level Road, Hopewell, died Friday, November 29, 1996. She was born in Shawsville, and was a Hopewell resident for 32 years. Mrs. Hollins was the daughter of the late Calvin and Birdie Smith Chandler, and the widow of Herman Archie Hollins, who died in January 1996. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Hollins Webb and David T. Webb of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, David Jeffrey Webb, Stephen Timothy Webb and Jennifer Ashley Webb of Chesterfield; two sisters, Annie C. Gibson and Vivian Lloyd of Roanoke, and a brother, Kinley O'Dell of Roanoke. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, December 2, in the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rodney Mason, pastor of the Assembly of God, officiating. Visitation will follow the service in the chapel until 8:30 p.m. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke.

JOHNSON, Jack C., Sr., 85, of Bedford, died Thursday, November 28,1996 at his residence. He was born on October 7,1911 in Covington, Va., a son of the late Charles William Johnson and Bettie Vaughn Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Vassar Johnson. He was a retired mechanic with the Bedford County Public Schools. Jack is survived by three sons, Jack C. Johnson, Jr., Harvey R. Johnnson, Sr. and William E. Johnson, all of Bedford; thirteen grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, December 2, 1996 at 11 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Floyd Gross and the Rev. Robert Sherrill officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home. KERN, James Franklin, (``Frank""), 93, of Falling Spring, died Saturday, November 30, 1996. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loving Funeral Home CHapel, Covington.

LAING, Ernest Lee, 80, of Grass Valley, Calif., died at his home on Saturday, November 23, 1996. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry L. Laing; his mother, Gertrude Laing, and a brother, Howard Laing. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Laing; a son, Thomas Laing of California; a grandson, Tyson Laing of Germany; a sister, Ethel Wells of Roanoke, Va., and one nephew, David Laing of North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at his church at a later date.
