W&L GETS 1ST WIN ON CALIFORNIA TRIP

Freshman center Rich Peterson blocked a driving shot by Jeremy Vandervoet with two seconds remaining to preserve Washington and Lee's 83-81 victory over Claremont Mudd Scripps in Claremont, Calif.

The Generals (1-2) led 43-32 at halftime after outscoring the Stags 11-1 in the final two minutes of the first half. Claremont (0-3) rallied in the final six minutes behind the hot shooting of Jon Paisley, who scored all of his 19 points in the second half.

W&L was led by Chris Couzen, who scored a season-high 24 points.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Ferrum 73, Gallaudet 60: Dontel Arrington (William Fleming) and Rodney Ponzo scored 19 points each and Michael Hunter (Alleghany) added 18 as the Panthers (2-2) beat the Bisons (0-5) in the consolation game of the Gallaudet University Holiday Tournament in Washington.

Old Dominion 65, North Carolina-Charlotte 64: Odell Hodge (Laurel Park) scored 18 points and had four of the Monarchs' 14 blocked shots as ODU (3-0) edged the 49ers (1-1) in Norfolk.

James Madison 75, Mississippi State 72: Chatney Howard scored 24 points, and the Dukes (2-1) held off the Bulldogs (2-1) in Starkville, Miss.

The Citadel 78, William and Mary 71: Matt Newman scored 16 points, and the Bulldogs (3-1) opened the second half with a 13-4 run to defeat the Tribe (2-2) in Williamsburg. Bobby Fitzgibbons led William and Mary with 24 points and 14 rebounds.
