BLANKENSHIIP, Pauline Vaughn, 78, of Route 2, Narrows, died Saturday, November 30, 1996, at her home. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born in Bland County on July 31, 1918, and was the daughter of the late James William and Ada Virginia Whittaker Vaughn. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifton Blankenship; daughter, Betty B. Clemons; five sisters, Lelia Meadows, Clarice Blankenship, Dollie Lucado, Nell Moran, Mabel Hare, and three brothers, John Vaughn, Clarence Vaughn and Grover Vaughn. She was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus on Blankenship Mountain, near Narrows. She is survived by two sons, Danny E. Blankenship and James W. Blankenship, both of Narrows; two daughters, Linda B. Pruett, Bluefield, Va., Carol B. Taylor, Narrows; a sister, Frances Atwood, Narrows; ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Lord Jesus on Blankenship Mountain, near Narrows, with the Rev. Kenneth Blankenship and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Concluding services will be held in the Heavenly View Cemetery near Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
CALDWELL, Florence Mildred McCue, 78, of Pearisburg, died Saturday morning, November 30, 1996, at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek. Mrs. Caldwell was born in Vinton on October 26, 1917, and was a daughter of the late J. W. and Florence Vinyard McCue. Mrs. Caldwell was a graduate of William Byrd High School, St. Andrews Business College of Roanoke and National Business College of Roanoke. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg and had retired from Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Kathryn Edmondson and Emily Meadow, and three brothers, William, Edward and Harry McCue. She is survived by her husband, Walter B. Caldwell Jr. of Pearisburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Walter B. III and Linda Caldwell of Cranbury, N.J.; one sister, Mary White Jacobs of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Jeffery, Loren and Caren Caldwell of Cranbury, N.J., and a dear niece, Polly Hiler of Vinton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at First United Methodist Church in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Freddrick L. Long and Judith W. Long officiating. Interment will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Givens Funeral home in Pearisburg. CLEMONS, Dianne Edwards, 53, of Orange Park, Fla., formerly of Salem, Va., died Friday, November 29, 1996. She was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School. SHAVER, Gracie Lee, 85, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, December 1, 1996 at her home. She was born in Floyd County on March 20, 1911 to the late Leonard and Lundy Akers Reed. SPANGLER, Benjamin Lesley, 73, of Vesta, died Sunday, December 1, 1996, in Patrick County Memorial Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was awarded a Bronze Star for participating with his squadron in the landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on VE Day. He also was awarded The European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with four other Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart medal for his participation in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Spangler was one of a team of 16 at the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center at Fort Belvoir responsible for developing the U.S. Tactical Floating Bridge. He was a 40-year resident of Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, where he worked for the federal government at the Engineer Research and Development Laboratory at Fort Belvoir. He was a member of Meadows of Dan Ruritan Club, Vesta Rescue Squad and VFW Post #8467, and a 60-year member of Meadows of Dan Baptist Church. He was born in Patrick County on April 16, 1923, to the late Charles (``Tump"") Spangler and the late Kittie Cockram Spangler. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Spangler. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Handy Spangler, who was his teenage sweetheart; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Bohning of Atlanta, Ga., and Mrs. Vicki Perry of Lebanon, Ohio; four grandchildren, Chris Satchel, and Mark, Tracy and Jennifer Bohning; one sister, Mrs. Evelyn Young of Greenwood, S.C., and four brothers, Maurice Spangler of Bristol, Tenn., Harvie Spangler of Ruckersville, Bishop Spangler of San Diego, Calif., and Pat Spangler of Gainesville, Fla. Funeral services for Mr. Spangler will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jack Holland and the Rev. Clarence Marshall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The flag will be presented to Mrs. Spangler by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. SPARKS, Stella Frances, 82, of Route 2, Box 400, Bluefield, W.Va., died Saturday, November 30, 1996, in a Bluefield hospital. Born on February 15, 1914, in Ada, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Riley and Mary Emma Vires Roland. She attended Ada Chapel Church at Ada and attended Mercer County Schools. She was a lifelong resident of Mercer County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Boyd Sparks; one son, Wayne Sparks; one grandson, Robert B. Sparks; one brother, Calvin Roland, and one daughter-in-law, Roberta Sparks. Survivors include one daughter, Sandra G. Sparks of Bluefield; three sons, Kenneth R. Sparks of Pulaski, Va., Raymond C. Sparks and his wife Brenda of Swartz Creek, Mich., and Gary L. Sparks and his wife Patsy of Radford, Va.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ward Roland, Ferrell Roland and Gene Roland of Bluefield, and one sister, Iva Branham of Flint, Mich. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at the George W. Seaver Funeral Home Chapel in Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. Donald Blankenship and the Rev.
