ATHLETES, CLASS OFFICERS HONORED IN MONTGOMERY

The following students were selected as Senior of the Month for November by the Montgomery County Public Schools.

* Jason D. Phipps is captain of the football team at Auburn High School. He has lettered three years in football and received an honorable mention award in the district and made second team defensive back. He also has played two years of basketball and ran track for a year, receiving the coach's award and finishing fifth in the district 200 meter dash. He also has been a football homecoming court representative for four years and was crowned king this year.

Outside of sports, Phipps is an active member of the Swing Choir, having received the Best Male Dancer Award and making the Senior High All-District Choir, All-County Choir and National Anthem Choir. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, College Club, Spanish Club, Student Council Association and the Mountain Academic Conference Competition. He is recipient of several awards including the U.S. Army Reserves National Scholar/Athlete Award and a nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. He is the son of Donna Barbatti and Ted Phipps, both of Christiansburg.

* Blacksburg High School senior Katie Sina has been active with the class government for the past two years, serving as treasurer as a junior and senior. Sina also been very involved with dancing, theater and choir. She is a four-year member of the cheerleading squad and has danced for 13 years. She performed with a dance company at the Kennedy Center's 25th anniversary in Washington. She is a member of the International Thespian Society and has played parts in several plays, including Summer Musical Enterprise's "Fiddler on the Roof" and "South Pacific." She also has appeared in several Blacksburg High productions.

Sina attended in the Virginia School of the Arts, Virginia Governor's School for Performing Arts and was a delegate at Girls State. She also helped with the film "Inside the College Admission Process" through Virginia Tech. She is the daughter of Julie Sina of Blacksburg.

* James "Matt" Wright is serving his second year as secretary of his class at Christiansburg High School. He also is secretary of the National Honor Society and vice president of the Beta Club. Wright also has participated in the Monogram Club, Latin Club, Youth and Government Club and Key Club. He was a member of the prom committee as a junior and this year he is a member of the graduation committee.

Wright is a four-year member of the soccer team and has played two years of varsity football. He received the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club Award as a junior. He also is a nominee for Wendy's High School Heisman award. Wright also works with the Hunters for Hungry Program and helps out with its food bank through his church. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Wright Jr. of Christiansburg.

* Paul D. Sink has played four years of football and baseball at Shawsville High School. He also has wrestled for four years and received the Coaches Award in wrestling as a junior. As a junior, he placed second in the district wrestling tournament and second in the region and finished in the top eight in the state.

Wright is a member of the Beta Club, Homecoming Court, Art Club and College Club. He has received several awards including the American Legion Boys State, the Academic Bar and the highest grade point average in English and drawing as a junior. He is the son of Doug and Charlotte Sink of Shawsville.

Members of the Blacksburg High School speech and debate teams were victorious over 24 other schools at a meet in Charlotte, N.C., Nov. 22-24. The following students received trophies: Moriel Vandsbarger, David Law, Catherine Bernard, Carmen Badinelli, Feras Khan, Ashley Cohen, Kara Mills, Amee Ranck, Phoebe Connelly, Ynoi Schneller, Lucas Kline, Jon Arthur, Nancy Bell, Davy Tyson, Jessica Smith. The following students were semifinalists: Hilary Hamby, Adam Breske, Sara Emery, Ashley Hirt, Stephanie Schwartz, Beth Rodriguez, Chris Gregory and Smita Sarao.

MEETINGS, EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

There will be a financial aid workshop for parents and seniors at Radford High School. The workshop will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the school's library. Buddy Johnston of Radford University will be the speaker. The workshop is for parents of college-bound students, at both two- and four-year colleges. Sources of financial aid and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be explained.

Children can enjoy Breakfast with Santa at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School on Saturday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The morning will include a breakfast, musical entertainment and pictures with Santa. There also will be a bake sale. The cost is $3 for adults and $1.75 for children. For tickets, stop by the school or call 951-5726 for reservations.

Radford High School choirs and symphonic band will present their annual winter concert Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The concert will be at Preston Auditorium on the campus of Radford University. Admission is $2.

There will be a book fair for parents and students at Margaret Beeks Elementary School through Thursday. The hours are Tuesday, 3:30-8 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Donations will also be accepted for the Montgomery County Christmas Store.
