Electricity rates paid by an average residential customer of Virginia Power increase 93 cents per month beginning this week, according to the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
The SCC has approved an increase in the amount that the Richmond-based utility can charge for the fuel it uses to generate electricity. The new fuel factor is 1.322 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared with the previous 1.229 cents, the SCC said. Fuel charges are reviewed annually.
The SCC lets Virginia Power recover all fuel expenses. The rate increase is based on the utility's projected fuel costs for the coming year with a correction for any errors in last year's projections.
In Western Virginia, the company sells electricity in portions of Alleghany, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.
