BEIGHTOL HONORED FOR SOCCER PLAY

Randolph-Macon's Aimee Beightol, a graduate of Cave Spring High School, has been named to the coaches' Division III All-South Region women's soccer first team.

Beightol, a sophomore, is a defender for the Yellow Jackets. The second team included Roanoke College forward Lisa Franzino, a senior from East Setauket, N.Y. Among the third-team selections were: Roanoke goalie Kara Hedges, a senior from Westminster, Md.; Roanoke defender Angela Amstutz, a senior from Doylestown, Pa.; Roanoke forward Meredith Arnott, a senior from Burke; Washington and Lee defender Nicole Johnson, a sophomore from Cream Ridge, N.J.; and Washington and Lee midfielder Jennifer Grant, a senior from Midlothian.

In other college soccer news:

* Senior co-captain Chris Chladek topped the list of award winners announced by the Virginia Tech men's team.

Chladek, a sweeper, was named most valuable player after earning All-Atlantic 10 Conference and all-conference tournament honors. He had only one goal and six assists, but stood out on defense.

Other Hokies award winners were: Brian MacFarlane, offensive player of the year; Leto Alibaruho, defensive player of the year; Blair Patterson, rookie of the year; Andrew Jensen, most improved player.

* Virginia's Mike Fisher and Billy Walsh are among the 10 finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's national player of the year award. The winner will be announced Jan.10.

Fisher, a senior midfielder, led the Cavaliers in scoring this year with 11 goals and 10 assists. Walsh, a junior midfielder who played on the U.S. Olympic team this year, had five goals and eight assists.

TENNIS Roanoker wins tournament opener

K.J. Hippensteel, a Roanoker now playing out of a tennis academy in Florida, won his opening match in the boys' 16-and-under division of the Eddie Herr International tennis tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. After a bye in the opening round at the Inverary resort, Hippensteel defeated Mark Hilton of Great Britain 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3. He will meet 12th-seeded Jose Livano of Colombia in the third round.
