THEIR HISTORY OF HELPING IS A SHARED GIFT

For almost 40 years, B.C. and Elizabeth Stout have lived between Vera Smith and Becky Jones on Maine Avenue in Northwest Roanoke. And for almost 40 years, they've been an example of what it means to be neighbors.

The three households look after each other like family. In the summer they garden together. In the winter they make sure the snow gets shoveled off sidewalks. Whenever one of them cooks something especially good, it is happily shared.

They live all year long with the kindness and charity normally associated with the holiday season.

In the past, according to Elizabeth Stout, they exchanged small gifts to celebrate Christmas. But this year they decided to do something different. Something "more meaningful."

"We decided we'd each give to the Good Neighbors Fund in honor of the other two," she said. "That way, our gifts would go to someone who really needed it."

With their donations, the Stouts, Smiths and Joneses have brought to the needy of Roanoke the same thing they've brought to each other all these years: a helping hand.

They've also showed their community that being a neighbor is about more than living next door. It's about caring.

"If one of us needs something," Elizabeth Stout said, "We know that the others are there to help us."
