The Gainsboro branch of the Roanoke Public Library has been named to the National Register of Historic Places - just in time for a celebration there Friday.
John Kern, director of the state's Roanoke Regional Preservation Office, learned Monday that the library had become the 24th place in the city to receive the designation.
At 3 p.m. Friday at the Gainsboro branch, Roanoke's library system will celebrate the latest honor as well as the 75th anniversaries of both the branch and the system. The city system was established in May 1921; the Gainsboro branch opened that December in a rented office in an Odd Fellows Hall.
The state Board of Historic Places named it a historic landmark in September and recommended it be placed on the national register.
