ASHBY, Oscar David, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 2, 1996. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Mildred L. and Bobby Ferguson of Roanoke; son, Carlton W. Ashby of Roanoke; also surviving are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 1996. The interment will be private. Friends may call at Lotz Roanoke Chapel Wednesday 4 to 9 p.m.

BANNISTER, James Albert, 78, of Buchanan, died Monday, December 2, 1996. He is survived by three brothers, William F. Bannister, Roanoke, Leander Bannister, Buchanan, Henry Bannister, Little Washington, Pa; one sister, Mary Holley, Richmond; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held noon Saturday, December 7, 1996 at the Rader Buchanan Chapel. Interment will follow in the Indian Rock Cemetery. A wake will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

CALDWELL, Robert Mason, 48, of Roanoke, departed this life Sunday, December 1, 1996, at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. He was a member of Salem Church of Christ. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served four years in the U.S. Navy, and was recalled to active duty during the Persian Gulf War. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Lee and Gerald F. Caldwell. He is survived by his parents, James R. and Betty B. Caldwell of Salem; one sister, Adrianna Goodwin of Carmichael, Calif.; two brothers, David S. Caldwell of Roanoke and James R. Caldwell Jr. of Huntsville, Ala.; a special friend, Faye; and numerous friends and relatives. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 5, 1996, at 2 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, Blacksburg, with the Rev. Noah J. Underwood and the Rev. Mitchell Luckie officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.

CRAGHEAD, Eva Jacobs, 82, of Moneta, our dear and precious mother, went to be with Jesus on Monday, December 2, 1996. She joins her beloved husband, Jennings Bruce Craghead; their little girl, Barbara Ann; her dear parents, John Moorman Jacobs and Sallie Kathryn Jacobs; and many other loved ones. She was born December 28, 1913 in Bedford County. She was a member of the Morgans Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons and their families, James Bruce and Fay L. Craghead, Moneta; grandson and wife, Jeffrey Bruce and Leigh Ann Craghead; great-grandson, Johnston Bruce Craghead; granddaughter and husband, Courtney Craghead Carr and Todd E. Carr; great-grandson, Samuel Jennings Carr; son, Jennings L. (Pete) and Margie P. Craghead, Moneta; grandson and wife, Michael Jennings and Lura Craghead; son, Robert N. (Bobby) and Patricia T,. CRAGHEAD, Owen Matthew, 84, of Bedford, died Tuesday, December 3, 1996 in Oakwood Manor. He was born in Bedford County on February 8, 1912, a son of the late James Spencer Craghead and Rosa Ella Wills Craghead. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary G. Craghead, two brothers, James Cecil ``Pete"" Craghead and Nelson Sales Craghead, and a sister, Martha Christine Craghead. He was a retired Plant Manager and Assistant Designer for Hampton Looms of Virginia. Owen was on Town Council from 1956 to 1968 and served as Mayor of Bedford from 1962 to 1968. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, BPOE Lodge #321, Lynchburg, and a former member of the Bedford Lions Club. He was a charter member of the Bedford Life Saving Crew. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Davis Craghead; one son, Kenneth O. Craghead, Bedford; one daughter, Lynn Craghead Boone, San Francisco, Calif.; two brothers, William Craghead and Ray Craghead, both of Bedford; two sisters, Lucille Laughon and Ellen Wilkes, both of Bedford; a granddaughter, Joy Boone Hartsfield of Reseda, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 1996, in Greenwood Cemetery, Bedford, with the Rev. D. Glen Langston and the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass, Jr. officiating. CROOK, Harold Lewis, II, 31, of Cumberland Street, Marion, died Monday, December 2, 1996, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Crook was born in Bethesda, Md. He was a graduate of Marion Senior High School and was employed as a shop foreman with World Wide Equipment Enterprises, Kenworth Division, in Abingdon for over 12 years. Survivors include his wife, Kim S. Crook, Marion; two children, Amber Dawn Crook and Harold Lewis (``Trey"") Crook III, both of the home; mother and stepfather, Louise and Doyle Cross, Marion; father and stepmother, Harold and Pat Crook, Marion; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenny and Anita Crook, Maryville, Tenn.; one stepsister, Penny Harr, Blountville, Tenn.; maternal grandmother, Ruby Shaver, Copper Hill, and paternal grandmother, Helen Anderson, Camp Springs, Md. He is also survived by many other loving relatives. Funeral services for Harold Lewis Crook II will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. DEAN, Laura Jane, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 2, 1996. She was born in Botetourt County to the late John Minor and Delia Carey Dean. Survivors include five sisters, Lillian Dean, Alice Macklin, Audrey Dean, Annie Dean, all of Roanoke, and Evelyn Chrichlow of Richmond; four brothers, Charles Dean, Frank Dean, Richard Dean, all of Roanoke, and Arthur Dean of Salem; three sisters-in-law, Sarah Dean, Edmonia Dean, both of Roanoke, and Alma Dean of Salem; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, Cloverdale. Rev. Tommy London will officiate with the interment in the church cemetery. ELLIOTT, Howard W., (``Boots''), 80, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 2, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. He was a retired agent for Nationwide Insurance. Mr. Elliott was active in the Gideons for some 40 years and was a member for some 42 years at Melrose United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Bertie Kessler Elliott; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald S. and Betty Elliott, Vinton; a daughter, Joyce A. Elliott, Roanoke; two grandsons, Michael and Travis Elliott; two brothers, John W. Elliott and James Elliott, both of Roanoke; a sister, Virginia E. Pollard, Raleigh, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 1996 from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Edward J. Taylor Jr. will officiate. ELLIS, John Gordon, 77, of Richmond, and formerly of Moneta, passed away Monday, December 2, 1996. He was born April 19, 1919 in Franklin County, a son of the late John Hubert Ellis and Annie Belle Morgan Ellis. He is survived by four sisters, Vangie E. Cooper, Rocky Mount, Mae E. Martin, Moneta, Katherine E. Shackelford, Lynchburg, Marie E. Brown, Evington; five brothers, William C. Ellis, Concord, Kenneth D. Ellis, Lynchburg, Randolph Ellis, Calvin Coolidge Ellis, both of Moneta, Rudolph Ellis, Hardy. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, December 5, 1996 at 2 p.m. from the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Scott McLain. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. FERRIS, Murrell Kesler, 80, of Goodview, died Tuesday, December 3, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, William C. and Minnie Amos Kesler; sister, Hazel Christine Hodges; brother, C. E. IKENBERRY, Margaret Ruth Moulton, 89, of Woodbridge, died Sunday, December 1, 1996. Mrs. Ikenberry was a graduate of University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. She was an educator, including teaching in a one room school in Corwin, Kansas. Mrs. Ikenberry was married to the Shepherd College President, the late Oliver S. Ikenberry and served as First Lady from 1947 to 1968. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women in West Virginia and Nashville, Tennessee, where she served as State President. Margaret Ruth Ikenberry Study Grant was created in her honor by the American Association of University Women in 1958. Mrs. Ikenberry was named to the Who's Who of American Women in 1961-62. She was also a charter member and Grand Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Ikenberry had been a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church, serving as President of the Women of the Church in Shepherdstown, W. Va. and Nashville, Tenn. She enjoyed music, poetry, painting and she was a published author. In 1990, she received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Shepherd College. She was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her and devoted her life to making a contribution to the betterment of mankind through her many church and community activities. Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Elizabeth Wade of Manassas, Jane Ikenberry Dorrier, Scottsville; one son, Stanley O. Ikenberry, Washington, D.C.; sister, Ola Harris of Kansas; one granddaughter, Margaret Anne Dorrier; six grandsons, David, Steven, and John Ikenberry, Richard and Jonathan Wade and Lindsay G. Dorrier, III; four great-grandchildren, Sarah, Kathryn, Matthew and John Life Ikenberry; one niece, Becky Crosswhite and her children, Allison, Adam and Ryan; three nephews, John Moulton, Van Moulton, David Harris; two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Frederick and Marsha Ikenberry and children, Barbara Tulley, Kenneth,Joel and Jack Ikenberry, Vernon Rhodes and children, Shirley Spate and Donna Shennefelt; many cousins and loved ones who mourn her loss. LEONARD, James Edward, (""Jimmy"") 41, of Galax died Saturday, November 30, 1996 at Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born December 28, 1954 in Carroll County to John H. Leonard and Virginia Ruth Taylor Leonard. MUSE, Pearl Bowles, 73, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord from her home on Monday, December 2, 1996. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Louanna Bowles; her sisters, Christine Bowles Bramlett and Margie Fuller; and brother, George Bowles. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Claborn N. Muse; two sons, James and William (Dilly); two daughters, Patricia and Evelyn; daughter-in-law, Vickie; two special and loving grandchildren, Brandi and Eric, all of Roanoke; also surviving are three sisters; one brother; and many other close friends and relatives. STAPLES, Ethel Hicks, 97, of Hillsville, passed away Monday, December 2, 1996, in Laurel Meadows Home. S he was born March 26, 1899 in Carroll County. Mrs. Staples was preceded in death by her husband, Solon Staples; and two daughters, Annaleen Cochran and Betty Sue Hodges. STOWE, Mary Zana Corns, of Martinsville, passed away Sunday, December 1, 1996, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born December 19, 1906, in Patrick County, Va., and was the daughter of the late James Henry and Bertha Handy Corns. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Charlie Brambridge Stowe. Her survivors include her two sons and their wives, Charles Henry and Jane Stowe of Roanoke and Donnie Brambridge and Keren Stowe of Milton, Fla. Zana is also survived by four granddaughters and their husbands, Margaret Stowe Gregory, Kimberly Stowe and Nicklos Sharp and Heidi Stowe and Troy Collien, all of Roanoke, Vel Stowe and Darren Thurber of Goose Creek, S.C. She had a grandson and his wife, Matthew and Barbara Stowe of Birmingham, Alabama. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Shaun and Brent Gregory of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Sarah and Emily Sharp of Roanoke and Zachary and Mason Thurber of Goose Creek, S.C. She had a former daughter-in-law, Claudette Stowe of Pensacola, Fla. She had one brother, Earl Corns of Martinsville and four sisters, Zula Handy of Patrick Co., Christine Brooks of Rocky Mount, Clata Blankenship of High Point, N.C. and Dorothy Stanley of Roanoke. WILLIAMS, Jason Allan, 18, of Route 3, Marion, died Monday, December 2, 1996, from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was a native of Smyth County, having lived all of his life in Marion. He was employed at the Smyth County Community Hospital in the Maintenance Department, and was a 1995 graduate of the Marion Senior High School. Survivors include his parents, Millard and Virginia Williams, Marion; three sisters, Melinda Williams, Marion, Cindy Sullivan, Abingdon, Lorinda Conklin, St. Paul, Minn.; paternal grandmother, Virgie Williams, Chilhowie; three nieces, Tosha Thompson, Marion, Sarah Sullivan, Abingdon, Autumn Sullivan, Abingdon; one nephew, Mickey Thompson, Marion; a special friend, Tanjie Hutton.
