PULASKI COUNTY NEEDS OVERTIME TO WIN OPENER

Dorian Hendricks rallied Pulaski County in the fourth period as the Cougars forced overtime and overcame upset-minded Roanoke Catholic 73-68 on Tuesday night on the Celtics' floor.

Hendricks scored 14 of his 28 points in the final period and overtime. The Cougars trailed 49-35 after three quarters, but outscoried Catholic 25-11 in the fourth and missed a shot for a victory at the end of regulation.

The Celtics finally succumbed to Pulaski County's defensive pressure in the fourth and missed four free throws - including the front end of two one-and-ones - in the last four minutes of regulation.

The Cougars' comeback overshadowed a 33-point performance by Catholic's Brendan McCarthy, who made seven of nine 3-point field-goal attempts.

Ronald Branch scored 16 for the Cougars and Justin Peek had 11.

Terron Reed scored 14 points for the Celtics and Chad Wall had 10.

Christiansburg 63, Auburn 47: The Blue Demons outscored the Eagles 24-8 in the first quarter and never looked back in winning a season-opening non-district battle of Montgomery County rivals in Auburn.

Four players scored in double figures for Christiansburg, led by Mike Kazee's 13 points.

Eric Lucas scored nine of his 12 points in the first half and the Demons led 36-22 at intermission. Scott Baker had 11, Conan Morgan 10.

Adam Loveday and Bill Morris scored 12 for Auburn, which struggled offensively for most of the night and made only 17 of 38 free throws.

Martinsville 60, Tunstall 56: The Bulldogs overcame a four-point second quarter and rallied for a season-opening victory over the Trojans, their former Piedmont District rivals, in Dry Fork.

Leander Preston and Kelsey Green scored 14 points apiece for Martinsville, which needed 44 points in the second half to overcome a 12-point deficit.

Tunstall was led by Lorenzo Preston's 15 points.

Giles 61, Rocky Gap 56: Robbie Claytor scored 10 of his 19 points in a big third quarter as the Spartans won a non-district opener in Pearisburg.

Giles was outscored in every quarter except the decisive third, in which the Spartans dominated Rocky Gap 27-13. Adam Jones scored eight of his 13 points in the third quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds. Claytor added six rebounds and three steals.

Matthew Akers scored 18 points and Kenny Shrader contributed 13 for the Eagles.

Narrows 60, Shawsville 48: David Turner scored 18 points and Dallas St.Clair added 16 as the Green Wave opened with a victory in Shawsville.

The Shawnees were led by 6-foot-3 sophomore Linden Ryan, who had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Chris Graham also had 14 points.

Covington Boys' Home 76, Craig County 62: Mike White and Chris Hampton combined for 45 points to lead the Indians to a season-opening victory over the Rockets in New Castle.

Dwayne Crawford's 19 points paced Craig County (0-1).

Graham 70, Blacksburg 63: Jeff Lynch scored 20 points to lead the G-Men past the Indians in a non-district game in Blacksburg.

Graham (1-0) led 51-41 heading into the fourth quarter and was able to hold off a late Indians surge. Jason Hypes scored 15 points, Jordan Burton added 11 points, including 3 three-pointers, and Mike Mullins had 10 for the visitors from Bluefield.

Phillip Klaus and Matt Maher led Blacksburg (0-1) with 22 and 17 points, respectively.

Patrick County 68, Dan River 56: In Stuart, Corey Reynolds scored 37 points as the Cougars downed the Wildcats in the opener for both teams.

Patrick County got off to a sluggish start, but roared back in the second quarter behind Reynolds' 12 points to tie it at 29. The Cougars sealed the victory by hitting 12 of 17 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Lloyd Tillman led Dan River with 19 points and Alan Petty added 16.

Aaron Hill scored 11 points for Patrick County.

Girls

Franklin County 56, E.C. Glass 51, OT: Sophomores Kristie Oakes and Christina McBride stepped up in the extra period as the Eagles edged the Hilltoppers in Rocky Mount in the opener for both teams.

McBride scored four of her 16 points and Oakes had all four of her points after Glass had taken a five-point lead in overtime. Brandi Manns added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Franklin County.

Michele White led the Hilltoppers with 17 points and Tia Scott had 16.
