tree farm (at right), selects white pines for the harvest. Lonnie

Harris owns about 500 acres in Floyd and Hillsville, planted with 15

varieties of trees. The Fraser fir is the most popular, he says.

Slaughter says he expects a good year, selling 15,000 to 20,000

trees to retailers, some as far away as New Jersey and Chicago.
