GRAY, Nellie St. Clair, 82, of Rt. 1, Vinton passed away Tuesday, December 3, 1996. She was a charter member of the Jordantown Church of God. She was preceeded in death by her husband, John Oakey Gray; and a son, Troy A. Gr ay. Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, John LeRoy and Margaret Gray, Jackie D. and Nancy Gray, Jerry C. Gray, all of Vinton, Danny L. and Linda Gray, Marietta, Ga.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey G. Wilkerson, Bedford, Joyce G. and Earl D. Ball, Linda C. and Maynard W. Rice, Dorothy G. and Walter O. Heins, all of Vinton; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; special friend, Esther Flowers, Vinton. Funeral services will be conducted from the Jordantown Church of God, 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 6, 1996 with the Rev. Michael D. Werle officiating. JENNINGS, John Benjamin, 76 of Willis, Tx formerly of Roanoke died December 2, 1996. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy during World War II. He was the son of the late Joseph B. and Mae B. Jennings. He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Annie Mae Jennings and Frances J. Chocklett; one brother, Joseph James Jennings; his dear departed wife, Marguerite Harper Jennings. He is survived by a daughter and husband, Clifford and Barbara J. Rains, Humble, Tx; son and wife, John Ben and Nancy Jennings, Houston, Tx; brother, William H. Jennings, Roanoke; two sisters, Helen J. Mawyer, Roanoke, and Elizabeth J. Nicely , Newport News; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services to be conducted at Cashner Funeral Home, 10 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 1996 with burial in Conroe Garden Park Cemetery.
JONES, Joseph Clyde, 49, of Chilhowie, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996 at his residence. He was president of J.C. Jones Trucking Inc., and attended the Glade Spring Community Church of God. He was preceded in death by his father, J. Dale Jones. He is survived by his mother, Margaret M. Jones, Chilhowie; a sister and b rother-in-law, Linda Jones and Walter R. Pupa, Raleigh, N.C.; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, December 6, 1996 at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. E.C. KELLEY, Gay McGuire, 70, of the Mechanicsburg Community, Bland, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996 at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. She was born October 13,1926 at Mechanicsburg, the daughter of Flora Harman McGuire, Bland and t he late Joseph Edward McGuire. She was a retired Registered Nurse from Bland Correctional Center. She attended the Bible Holiness Church, Christiansburg. In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Sandra Kelley, Bland; two brothers, Keith McGuire, White Gate, Tommy McGuire, Bland; one sister, Betty M. Vest, White Gate; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Brandon Kelley, Bland. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Homer D. Sawyer and the Rev. Benny Peyton officiating. Burial in the Mechanicsburg Cemetery, Mechanicsburg. LINKOUS, James Dawson, (``Jim''), 72, of Route 1, Box 173F (Largen Hill Court), Pulaski, died Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 1996, at his home. He was born in Cranes Nest (Wise County) on October 12, 1924, and was the son of the late Eugene B. Linkous and Willie Mae Currin Linkous. Mr. Linkous was a Christian and a member of the Faith Bible Church, Pulaski, and a member of the Clintwood Masonic Lodge #66. He was a retired employee of the Town of Pulaski and was a veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ollie A. Linkous, Pulaski; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Jan Linkous, Grahams Forge, Danny and Pam Linkous, Pulaski, Rev. Jim and Janice Linkous, Pulaski; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob Linkous, Wise; four sisters, Virginia Campney, Penn Yan, N.Y.; Francis Morris, Penn Yan, N.Y., Betty Jo Stallard, Richmond, Margaret Baker, Clintwood. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Chester Linkous officiating. Burial will follow in the Thornspring Cemetery, Pulaski County. LOCKE, Curtis Alan, 55, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 3, 1996. He was a graduate of Duke University and a special ed teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. He was preceded in death by his father, Irvin J. Locke. Surviving are a daughter, Ivy; his mother, Anna M. MUNDY, Richard Addison, (``Dick''), 66, of Radford, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at his home. He was a member of the Grove United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Barbara N. Mundy, Radford; a son, Kenneth Mundy, Christiansburg; and a daughter, Susan Martin of Radford; Seven grandchildren, Jamie Mundy, Lauren Finman, Heather Finman, Matt Martin, Chris Martin, Katy Martin, and Charley Martin also survive. A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 6, 1996, at the Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Clarence Dishman officiating. PAINTER, Rex F., 76, of Cripple Creek, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at Wythe County Community Hospital. Mr. painter was an active member of Crockett Chapel United Methodist Church in Cripple Creek. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge for 54 years, former member of Wythe County Electoral Board, former member of the Wythe Lions Club and the ASCS Board. He retired from the Virginia ABC Board after 22 years of service, and was a prominent Wythe County farmer. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Whitman Painter of Cripple Creek; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth Painter and Dick Willard of Cripple Creek; one brother and sister-in-law, Blair S. and Jean Painter of Cripple Creek; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 6, at 11 a.m. at the Crockett Chapel United Methodist Church, Cripple Creek, with Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Burial will follow in Fleming Cemetery. The body will be taken to the home Thursday at 6 p.m., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Surviving are his wife, Nannie Pethtel Rock; his children, Kenneth and Reitha Francis, Roanoke, Bill and April Francis, Hebron, Ind., Ed and Patricia Francis, Payson, Utah, Elizabeth and Ed Killman, Marysville, Tenn.; two brothers, George Rock, Cleveland, Ohio, Frank Rock, Steubinville, Ohio; four sisters, Annie Zullo, Ruth Rock, Mildred Rock, all of Wintersville, Ohio, Betty Vargo, Cadiz, Ohio; 45 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. STOWE, Mary Zana Corns, of Martinsville, passed away Sunday, December 1, 1996, in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born December 19, 1906, in Patrick County, Va., and was the daughter of the late James Henry and Bertha Handy Corns. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Charlie Brambridge Stowe. Her survivors include her two sons and their wives, Charles Henry and Jane Stowe of Roanoke and Donnie Brambridge and Keren Stowe of Milton, Fla. Zana is also survived by four granddaughters and their husbands, Margaret Stowe Gregory, Kimberly Stowe and Nicklos Sharp and Heidi Stowe and Troy Collier, all of Roanoke, Vel Stowe and Darren Thurber of Goose Creek, S.C. She had a grandson and his wife, Matthew and Barbara Stowe of Birmingham, Alabama. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Shaun and Brent Gregory of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Sarah and Emily Sharp of Roanoke and Zachary and Mason Thurber of Goose Creek, S.C. She had a former daughter-in-law, Claudette Stowe of Pensacola, Fla. She had one brother, Earl Corns of Martinsville and four sisters, Zula Handy of Patrick Co., Christine Brooks of Rocky Mount, Clata Blankenship of High Point, N.C. and Dorothy Stanley of Roanoke. Also surviving are a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, December 5, 1996, at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, December 6, 1996. Elder Larry Crotts is officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. SULLIVAN, Connie Mae, 71, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 3, 1996, at her home. She was retired from J.P. Stevens Carpet Company. She was a member of the Rosalind Hills Baptist Church and was a longtime member of the Green Ridge Baptist Church. She was a member of the Martha Sunday School Class, the Young At Hearts, and the W.M.U. She is survived by a son, Dennis S. Yarnold and Paula , Cleveland, Ohio; two stepsons, James M. Sullivan and William P. Sullivan; brother, Donald W. Hamlett, Salem; sister-in-law, Ruth Carlton Hamlett, Richmond; grandchildren, Amanda and Chelsie; a number of nieces and nephews. Also she is survived by many loving friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, 12 noon at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Tom Stocks officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. SUMMERS, Eva Mae Hill, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 1996. She was the widow of Edwin E. Hill and Raymond C. Summers. Mrs. Summers was retired from Gill Memorial Hospital. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny and Bill Clinebell, Vinton, Terry and Woody Carr, Detroit, Mich.; a son, Gary Summers, Vinton; two grandchildren, Lisa and David Summers. Graveside services will be at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 11 a.m. Friday, December 6, 1996, with Dr. Ha rry Y. Gamble officiating. SURRATT, Lake Marshall, 84, of Salem, passed away Monday, December 2, 1996. She was born September 6, 1912 in Carroll County. A Radford College graduate, she was an elementary teacher before retiring to Salem. She was a member of Salem Goodwin Memorial Methodist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Eugene and Mavis Surratt of Hagerstow n, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Merlian Marshall of Venice, Fla.; a son-in-law, Paul Dicks of Salem; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
