Feeling charitable this holiday season? Want to make someone else's holiday a little bit better? Here's a list of some of the local organizations that need your help this season:
*Help out your furry friends by giving to the Roanoke Valley SPCA's "Claws for Paws" donation drive. Christmas trees will be set up at Kroger stores through Dec. 26 to gather donations of pet food, shelter supplies and cash gifts.
*The Rescue Mission of the Roanoke Valley, 402 Fourth St. S.E., is in need of toys, underwear, canned goods, laundry supplies and toilet paper. Cash donations are also accepted. Call 343-7227.
*Share holiday cheer with American troops in Croatia and Hungary by sending care packages. Families and organizations are encouraged to send holiday decorations and cards, hard candy, gum, playing cards, puzzle books, writing paper and pens or personal items such as lip balm, toothbrushes and shower gel directly to the American Red Cross personnel working there.
For service members in Croatia, send packages to: American Red Cross, Station Manager, Operation Joint Endeavor, APO AE 09789. For Hungary, send to: American Red Cross, Operation Joint Endeavor, HQ 1st PERSCOM, APO AE 09793. Packages should be sent by Air Parcel Post by Monday.
*The Presbyterian Community Center, which provides food and financial assistance to people below the poverty level, needs donations of food and children's clothing. Cash donations are also needed. Bring donations to the center at 1228 Jamison Ave. S.E., or call 982-2911.
*The Community Christmas Store is accepting donations of new and used goods to help needy families from Roanoke County and Salem during the holiday season. The store needs new winter clothing for children and the elderly, nonperishable food and new toys and gifts.
The store, at 504 Roanoke St. in Salem, will accept donations today and Friday from noon to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations of new goods only will be accepted Monday through Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m.
For information on donating new items, call 389-2830 or 977-1099. For used items, call 389-0123. To volunteer, call 387-4322.
*Volunteers and cash donations are needed by the West End Center. Paper napkins, plates and cups, and school, office and art supplies are also needed. Call 342-0902 to donate or volunteer.
*Roanoke Area Ministries and The Roanoke Times are once again sponsoring the Good Neighbors Fund to raise money for those in need this holiday season. Checks made payable to the Good Neighbors Fund may be mailed to The Roanoke Times, P.O. Box 1951, Roanoke, Va. 24008.
The newspaper will publish the names - but not donation amounts - of contributing businesses, individuals and organizations, as well as memorial and honorific designations. Those requesting that their names not be used will remain anonymous.
*As always, Salvation Army volunteers will be ringing bells at area businesses, hoping to fill their red kettles with donations. They'll even be out in force on Christmas Eve, so it's never too late to donate.
