Ken Harris, a 1988 graduate of William Fleming High School and a Marine Corps veteran, has become part-time youth director of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Roanoke. Harris, who also attended Virginia Western Community College, is 26 and formerly was on the staff of Fincastle Baptist Church. He will share his time with Roanoke County Teen Center.

Janice Plympton, director of the after-school program of Fort Lewis Baptist Church in Salem, has assumed the additional duties of working with children and youth. She succeeds Lynn Litchfield on the staff.

Christopher Kingery has joined the staff of Red Hill Baptist Church as assistant pastor and youth director. A new music director, Tammy Booker, also is assuming her duties.

The Rev. M.L. Minnick Jr., a former pastor of Christ Lutheran Church of Roanoke who was reared in Salem, will retire in July from the national staff of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America based in Chicago. Minnick, on the staff for 20 years, heads the ELCA Division of Outreach, a mission arm of the denomination.

SPECIAL EVENTS

A Buddhist scholar, Bu Phrug, known as Rinpoche Buchu, will speak tonight at 7:30 through an interpreter at Valley Community Church, 5000 Carriage Drive S.W. Born 50 years ago in China, Phrug embarked on a religious vocation in childhood and has worked as a translator and editor. He is director of the general office of the Bureau of Research on Tibetan Buddhist Scriptures. He has translated several Tibetan texts into Chinese.

Volunteers in Mission, a United Methodist outreach to needy people overseas or in the United States, will send two teams of medical workers to Haiti in May. They will work with the poor at Cap Hatien. Call Jean Broyles at 366-9066 for more information.

Seventh-day Adventists who worship at 4904 Peters Creek Road N.W., have scheduled Kurt Allen as their guest speaker Saturday at 11 a.m. He is on the staff of the Potomac Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. A luncheon will follow.

The Covenant Players, a nationally traveled touring group that presents plays with a contemporary religious message, will visit Summerdean Church of the Brethren, 6604 Plantation Road, Hollins, Saturday and Sunday. The programs to prepare for Christmas will follow a supper at 5:30. On Sunday the drama group will perform at 9:45 and 11 a.m.

Bishop F. Neff Powell, who recently became the leader of Western Virginia Episcopalians, will be guest leader of Advent programs Wednesday and Dec. 18 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W. The family storytelling sessions will begin at 7 p.m.

Violence vs. Respect, a seminar for teens and their parents, is scheduled Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon at Maple Street Baptist Church, 902 Fairfax Ave. N.W. It will be led by the Revs. Vater C. Colbert, Johnny Stone and Cedric Malone, pastors of Maple Street, Hill Street and Greater Mount Zion Baptist congregations.
