Vinton Town Council has agreed to look into a complaint by citizens who live on Gates Lane who fear that planned development in nearby Roanoke would downgrade their neighborhood.
They are particularly concerned about the beating their street could take from added traffic. James H. Daughtridge, spokesman for the group, said the 12-foot-wide lane is maintained by the half-dozen or so owners of property along the street.
Daughtridge told council members this week that he understands plans are under way to build 20 or more houses on a 30-acre tract in the city at the north end of Gates Lane. Gates Lane is the only access to the property.
He asked where funds would come from to give the street the added maintenance it would need. Not only is the street narrow, Daughtridge said, but also steep, and on snowy and icy days a school bus could slide out of control.
After hearing Daughtridge's complaints, members of council asked Town Manager Clay Goodman and Town Attorney William Heartwell to investigate. Mayor Charles Hill asked them to check with Roanoke officials and developers to see if a compromise could be worked out.
