SULLIVAN BREAKS PAR IN QUALIFYING

Chip Sullivan had one of the best rounds of the day with a 2-under-par 70 on Thursday to move into contention at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in California.

Sullivan, the assistant pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, overcame winds gusting to 30 mph on the Sandpiper Golf Club course in Goleta to move into a tie for 43rd place at 144 through two rounds of the six-round event.

Stan Utley was alone in first place at 137. The top 40 finishers and ties receive a PGA Tour card for the 1997 season, and the next 70 finishers and ties earn a Nike Tour card.

Virginia Tech's wrestling team has signed two high school standouts to letters of intent.

Jarrod Martin of Beavercreek, Ohio, has placed in seven national competitions at the upper weights in freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments and has an 89-16 prep record. Sean Gray, a Pennsylvanian who wrestles at the lower weights for Blair Academy, was the 1995 Cadet National Champion in his class and has a 95-14 prep mark.
