A construction worker died Thursday after falling 20 feet from a ladder at G.W. Carver School in Salem.
Benjamin Larry Lucado, 48, of Salem was finishing a window on an addition to the elementary school. He lost his balance and landed on his head on concrete, said Ted Bratton, vice president of Jefco Inc., where Lucado was a longtime employee. Jefco is a Roanoke glass installer.
The accident happened about 1 p.m., before snow began falling Thursday and while a second Jefco worker held the ladder from the bottom.
Lucado was pronounced dead a short time later at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, said Lt. R.E. Gray of Salem police. An official cause of death was not available.
Officials from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry were investigating.
Students were not in the area, said Michael Bryant, assistant superintendent of Salem schools.
