ALLISON, Macie Eva Gunter, 83, of Allisonia, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 1996, in the Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. She was born October 30, 1913 in Wythe County. She was the daughter of the late David Biddle Gunter and Minnie Ann Dinkins Gunter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Allison; a granddaughter, Shanna Allison; two sisters, Myrtle Crigger, Lillie Crigger; and two brothers, Glen Gunter and Ellis Gunter. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Martha Ann) Quesenberry, Hillsville, Mrs. Junior (Mildred) Turman, Dugspur; four sons, Donnie Allison, Shiloh, Carl R. Allison, Pulaski, Harold Allison, Allisonia, Gilmer Allison, Hillsville; 19 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; one sister, Velma Gunter Turner, Pulaski; two brothers, Lafayette Gunter, Rocky Gap, Roy Gunter, Pulaski. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. W. David Hoover officiating. Interment will follow in the Allison Family Cemetery, Allisonia. ATKINS, B. I., 98, of 908 Spruce Street, Martinsville, died Thursday, December 5, 1996, at his home. Born on February 12, 1898, in Patrick County, he was a son of the late William Green Atkins and Kissie Maude Akers Atkin s. He was a retired, self-employed businessman. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie S. Atkins of the home; one brother, Robert G. Atkins of Martinsville; one sister, Ella A. Smith of Grand Junction, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 1996, in Roselawn Burial Park, with the Rev. Tim Whiteheart and Dr. Chevis Horne officiating. COX, James Ray, Jr., (``Sonny""), 63, of 303 Hampton Dr., Danville, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996 at his home. He was born October 29, 1933 in Roanoke, Va. to the late James Ray Cox, Sr. a nd Mary Evelyn Graybill Cox. He was a member of Otterville Methodist Church, Bedford, Va. He lived most of his life in Lynchburg and Bedford, Va. and was retired from Mead Corporation in Lynchburg, where he worked in the finishing department. Survivors include his fiancee, Rebecca J. ``Becky"" Hill, Danville; two daughters, Kelly Denise Cox, Volens, Va., Lisa Cox Wade, Rustburg; one son, Todd Mason Cox, Lynchburg; one sister, Mary C. Witt, Bedford; and two nephews also survive. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 1996, with the Rev. Luther L. Lemon officiating, with entombment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. CRAIG, Elsie O., (``Pauline''), 66, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 1996, in the Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born July 27, 1930 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Albert Gordon Overstreet and Mary Lucy Dooley Overstreet. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Eugene Craig; three brothers, George M. Overstreet, Madison M. (Pykie) Overstreet, Harry G. (Bud) Overstreet; and one sister, Laurie C. Worman. She is survived by her husband, John Isaac (Satch) Craig; three daughters and one son-in-law, Brenda C. and Ashby P. Burton, Emily C. CROUSHORN, Marvin Nicholas, 86, of Fairfield, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at his home. Mr. Croushorn was born September 2, 1910 in Augusta County, a son of the late George Nicholas Croushorn and Lettie Landes Croushorn. He was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church, and was an area farmer for many years. He was preceded in death by a son, George Nicholas Croushorn; and a sister, Mary Croushorn Alexander. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Carmen Tasker Croushorn, married April 4, 1931; one son, Nelson Lee Croushorn, Fairfield; two sisters, Ruby Croushorn Bailey, Mt. Sidney, Ruth Croushorn, Weyers Cave; one brother, Tracy Croushorn, Weyers Cave; grandchildren, Wanda C. Allen, Raphine, Donna C. CROWDER, Virginia Dare Smith, 76, of Richmond, formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, December 1, 1996. She was born in Kingsport, Tenn., the daughter of the late Willard M. and Willie Dare Patterson Smith, and was an active member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Newton Crowder. FAUSONE, Victoria Sayak, (``Ruth""), of Roanoke, died Thursday, Decem ber 5, 1996. She was the widow of James Fausone and was formerly of Detroit, Michigan. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Tony Sayak and two sisters, Mary Alouf and Adele Alouf. Surviving are two nephews, William G. Alouf, Roanoke, George Richardson and his wife, Denise, of Texas; her nieces, Jeanette A. Chittum and her husband, Herman, Roanoke, Cecelia A. Ways, Baltimore, Md., Josephine A. Ellis and her husband, George, Rockford, Md., Lillian A. Heilborn and her husband, George, Vienna, Va., Barbara A. Mosher and her husband, David, Crofton, Md. and Mrs. Edward (Zona) Alouf, Roanoke; also a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. GORDON, Rosie Naomi Dillon, 86, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday , December 4, 1996, in Carrollton, Ky. Mrs. Gordon was born in Giles County on September 10, 1910, and was a daughter of the late Henry Dillon and Ida Farmer Dillon. Mrs. Gordon was a member of the Ripplemead United Methodist Church. She was a retired cook from Giles High School with 20 years of service to the school. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frank Gordon; one son, Frank Lee (Pete) Gordon; and two brothers, Raymond Dillon and Robert Dillon. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth A. Tuttle of Columbus, Miss., Mary Louise Coombs of Carrollton, Ky.; one brother, Ernest Dillon of Pearisburg; two sisters, Mamie Echols of Blacksburg, Louise Dillon of Richmond; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. HETHERINGTON, Clyde Eugene, 78, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at his home. He was born March 16, 1918 at Trigg, the son of the late Earl Wright Hetherington and Lucy Stafford Hetherington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Morris Hetherington. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Tobie and Flo Hetherington, Dublin, Johnny and Nancy Hetherington, Pearisburg, David and Peggy Hetherington, Pearisburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Gail and James Weeks, Wallis, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Trenar and Mrs.. MAYS, Lawrence Lee, (``Buck""), 75, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, December 5, 1996, at the V.A. Medical Center, Salem. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Trew Mays. Mr. and Mrs. Mays were the former owners of Mountain Park Motor Court and the 221 Steak House. He was a naval veteran of World War II, serving on the U.S.S. New York in the Pacific. Mr. Mays was a member of the D.A.V. #3, V.F.W. #1264 and the American Legion Post 3, and served his fellow veterans through his work at the chapter home and at the V.A. Medical Center. Surviving are two daughters, Debra Mays Kegley, Roanoke, Lisa Renee Mays, Salem; a son, Michael Lee Mays, Roanoke; a grandson, Jason Lee and wife, Karen Kegley, Terre Haute, Ind.; two sisters, Ruth Anderton, Roanoke, Mildred Henderson, Little Rock, Ark.; a brother, James H. MURPHY, Daniel P., of Roanoke, passed away early Thursday, December 5, 1996 , in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After 45 years of service, he retired from C&P Telephone Company. He was a past council and chapter President of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a volunteer organization. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. and was the only child of Patrick and Elizabeth Murphy. His survivors include his wife, Margaret M. Murphy; son, Michael Murphy and wife, Cheri, Hampton, their daughters, Virginia and Iris; a daughter, Maureen Jean and husband, Roy, Virginia Beach, their daughter, Kelley, their sons, Jacob and Caleb; other loved ones, Bryan Alcorn and wife, Jenna, Roanoke; Cliff Alcorn and wife, Karen, Virginia Beach, their daughter, Sara Ashley, and their son, Scott Alan; a special cousin, Mrs. Rita Knitter, Philadelphia, Pa.; ""Booper"", his much cared for puppy. PIGG, Georgia Webb, 76, of Ferrum, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 1996. Born March 30, 1920, she was a daughter of the late William and Cassie Cecil Webb. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Liz and Eddie Thompson of Bassett, Linda and Nick Paul of Poquoson; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Hurl and Lorene Pigg of Ferrum, Arnold and Gail Pigg of Rocky Mount, Douglas and Jeanette Pigg of Ferrum; four sisters, Velma Wills of Florida, Dorothy Riggs and Zella Cooper, both of Beckley, W.Va., Bernice Wert of Matoka, W.Va.; one brother, Clarence Webb of Coal City, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren. SHELOR, Dorsey, 89, of 610 Floyd Avenue, Pulaski, died Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born on June 5, 1907 in Patrick County, and was the son of the late Asa Dallas Shelor and Sarah Shelor; and was a stepson of the late Ada B. Shelor. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Wilma Dalton; and by four brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Shelor was a retired construction supervisor for Trinkle and Dobyns Construction Co., Dublin, for 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. He was a deacon and clerk of the Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church, Patrick County. Surviving are his wife, Dora Vipperman Shelor, Pulaski; daughter and son-in-law, Vera and Hubert Terry, Pulaski; son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Elizabeth Shelor, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; son-in-law, Bill Dalton, Pulaski; sister, Mrs. Clinton (Virginia) Key, Martinsville; stepsisters, Mrs. Silas (Marie) Turman, Meadows of Dan, Mrs. William (Opal) Gilbert, Martinsville; five grandchildren, Teresa Dalton Underwood, Janice Dalton Linkous, Trevor Shelor, Derik Shelor, Travis Terry; four great-grandchildren. SINK, Lloyd Ellis, 84, of Newport News, died Thursday, December 5, 1996. He was a native of Franklin County. Mr. Sink retired from NASA in 1976. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge #278. Survivors include his wife, Me lva Saul Sink; two sons and daughters-in-law, L. Wallace and Elizabeth B. Sink, and Gary W. and Alice B. Sink of Newport News; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn S. and K. G. Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of Maude Hubbard of Roanoke and the late Charlie Price. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William Smith of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 1996 at Garden City Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don McCaskill officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Burial Park. VERNON, Bill, 59. The Bluegrass world lost one of its own when Bluegrass MC and commentator, Bill Vernon died Wednesday, November 20,1996, at his home in Wirtz. He is survived by his half brothers, Bob Vernon of Salt Lake City, Utah, Wes Vernon of Silver Springs, Md.; and a cousin, George ``Ike"" Benedict of Syracuse, N.Y. He is also mourned by scores of friends and fans who will miss his wry humor, his verbal acuity, and his deep knowledge and love of Bluegrass music. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, December 8, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan Chapel at Ferrum College in Ferrum, with a reception to follow at the Blue Ridge Institute adjoining the Ferrum College campus. WILLIS, Nettie Sutphin, 87, of York, Pa., and formerly of Laurel Fork, Va., passed away Thursday, December 5, 1996, in York. She was the daughter of the late John and Rosa Sutphin of Laurel Fork. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Mahloy; a son, Calvin Willis; a sister, Sylvia Willis, and a brother, Willie Sutphin. Surviving are four daughters, Lori Thorsen of York, Pa., Odell Quesenberry of Raleigh, N.C., Avis Effinger of White Plains, N.Y., and Kathleen Davi of Stamford, Conn.; one son, Brad Willis of Radford, Va.; five sisters, Alma Thompson of Meadows of Dan, Va., Gladys Thompson of Laurel Fork, Va., Hattie Thompson of Rich Creek, Va., Belle Willis of Floyd, Va., and Hazel Dowdy of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, Alvie Sutphin of Laurel Fork, Va., and Emory Sutphin of Boones Mill, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel in Floyd, Va. Burial will be in the Underwood Cemetery at Meadows of Dan, Va.
