SULLIVAN TIED FOR 24TH IN QUALIFYING

Chip Sullivan fought winds of 40 mph and finished with a 1-under-par 71 at the PGA Qualifying Tournament in Goleta, Calif., on Friday.

Sullivan, the assistant pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, is tied for 24th place at 215 through three rounds of the six-round event. After today's fourth round, the field will be reduced to the low 90 and ties for the final two rounds of the tournament, which finishes Monday.

Paul Claxton, who finished 48th on the Nike Tour this year, shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-shot lead in the $150,000 tournament. Claxton, 28, of Vidalia, Ga., had a 54-hole total of 209.

The top 40 finishers and ties receive a PGA Tour card for the 1997 season, and the next 70 finishers and ties earn a Nike Tour card.
