STATE FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF FOR PEARL HARBOR DAY

In honor of Pearl Harbor Day, Gov. George Allen has ordered that state flags be flown at half-staff today, the 55th anniversary of the attack that brought the United States into World War II.

More than 3,000 Americans were killed or wounded in the Japanese attack Dec. 7, 1941, on the naval base in Hawaii.

Veterans from the Roanoke area can mark the occasion at a ceremony and dinner in Lynchburg today. The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are sponsoring the event, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Marine Corps Reserve Center on Graves Mill Road.
