The Health Occupations Students Association at Christiansburg High School is busy organizing and participating in several activities during the holiday season.
The 25 members are organizing a bloodmobile for the American Red Cross. The bloodmobile will be at the school Thursday and the goal is to collect 50 pints to help with the shortage of blood during the holidays.
Members are also selling red carnations to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke.
Earlier this month, the club placed an angel tree in the school's library. Students were asked to select an angel from the tree and purchase a gift by Dec. 6. The gifts were then given to the Montgomery County Christmas Store. Members also baked items for the annual bake sale held by employees of Heritage Hall Heath Care Center. Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase clothing and gifts for adults at the facility who do not have relatives to visit them for the holidays.
The Health Occupations Students Association is a co-curricular club that is integral part of the health occupations class at the school.

Thirty-one Shawsville High School students are recipients of the statewide Academic Excellence Award from the Virginia High School League. The program recognizes participants in VHSL activities who also excel in the classroom. To earn this honor, students must maintain at least a 3.0 grade-point average during the grading period they compete and must be varsity letter winners in the VHSL activities program. The winners for the first six-week grading period include:

MEETINGS, EVENTS & HAPPENINGS
Bethel Elementary PTA will meet today at 7 p.m. at the school. Children in grades 3-5 will perform their annual winter concert. Discussion will include adult computer classes. Candy bars for fund-raiser can be picked up.

Blacksburg High School Choral Department will present its winter concert Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Four groups will perform: the Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Choir and the Chorale. Groups are directed by Jan Blumenthal. Admission is free.

Internet Business Technologies, an Internet service provider in Blacksburg, is sponsoring the IBT Internet Essay Contest. The contest is open to all Montgomery County middle and high school students. The contest deadline is Jan. 6.
The subject of the contest is the Internet's function in today's society and in the future. All essays must pertain to this subject. The writer should discuss the role the Internet plays in his or her daily life. Writers should also make predictions about the role of the Internet in the future.
Essays should be 500-600 words and will be reviewed by a panel of professionals who will judge each essay on the following criteria: creativity, insight, degree of realism, grammatical structure, spelling and writing style. The Montgomery County Public Schools are seeking community members to serve on the Advisory Committee for Alternative Education. Membership should consist of - but is not limited to - teachers; administrators; representatives from civic organizations, business, industry and human service agencies; and consumers concerned with serving the educationally at-risk population.
The committee will assist in formulation, development and evaluation of alternative education programs for educationally at-risk students as well as other duties. For more information and an application, call Judy Rutherford at 381-6116. Application deadline is Dec. 15.
The schools are also seeking members to serve on the Montgomery County Health Advisory Board. This board will assist in formulation, development and evaluation of a comprehensive school health program, including status of school health, health education, the school environment and health services.
