BARTER ANNOUNCES '97 SEASON

Barter Theatre's extended season for 1997 will start Feb. 5 with a reprise of its summer hit, Peter Ekstrom's comedy "Doctors and Diseases," moving to Barter's main stage for a run through March 9.

The rest of the season at the main stage includes:

"On the Third Day," J. Klein's re-telling of the Easter story, March 13 through April 5;

"Miracles" by Frank Higgins, which lets audiences see the world through the eyes of a child in a play reminiscent of "The Miracle Worker" story of Helen Keller, April 9 through May 10;

"Don't Dress for Dinner," a farce by Marc Camoletti, which got rave reviews during its London run, May 15 through June 14;

"Camelot," the Arthurian musical by Lerner and Lowe which became both a Broadway success and a movie, June 18 through Aug. 31;

"Alice ... Through the Picture Tube," a modern musical comedy by Ed Sala with music by Michael Hirsch on how television affects our lives, July 3 through Aug. 30.

"Camelot" and "Alice" will be performed at different times during their run, as will two plays across the street at Barter Stage II, "Travels with My Aunt" and "The Bear Facts." Throughout its summer season, Barter will have four different plays going on.

"Travels," a recent off-Broadway comedy by Giles Haveral adapted from a book by Graham Greene, will run from June 25 through Aug. 31. Jo Carson's "Bare Facts," giving audiences a mystical version of the Davy Crockett saga, runs July 2 through Aug. 30.

The other Stage II plays are:

"WMKS, On the Air, Where Music Kills Sorrow," another play by Frank Higgins, about a radio show that offers a microcosm of America in the 1930s and includes nostalgic songs, Sept. 4-28;

"Rite of Survivorship," a mystery blending chills with humor, Oct. 2-25;

Shakespeare's "Hamlet," last performed at Barter in 1967, Oct. 30 through Nov. 23;

"A Christmas Carol," a Barter adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, Nov. 28 through Dec. 28.

Barter is currently offering a variety of ticket discount plans for the 1997 season. Further information is available by writing Barter at P.O. Box 867, Abingdon, Va. 24212, or calling 628-399l.
