Seth Noonkester scored 20 points to lead Glenvar to a 90-81 non-district boys' basketball victory over James River at Buchanan on Monday.
Josh Williamson scored eight of his 19 points and Chris Evans had seven of his 16 points in the second quarter as the Highlanders outscored the Knights 23-10 for a 45-33 halftime lead. Aaron Kawa added 12 points for Glenvar (1-2).
James River (0-3) was led by Travis Blankenship, who scored a game-high 30 points.
North Cross 53, Miller School 41: Michael Stoeckle scored 16 points, pulled down seven rebounds and collected four assists to lead the Raiders over Miller School.
Ben Skipper scored a game-high 27 points to lead Miller School (0-1).
The Celtics, who forced mistakes but had trouble capitalizing, improved to 3-0.
Morehead (N.C.) 75, Magna Vista 73: Daniel Koontz scored 16 points including a game-winning layup as visiting Morehead beat the Warriors in a non-district game in Ridgeway.
Koontz scored eight of his points in the first quarter as Morehead jumped to a 23-12 lead. But the Warriors battled back in the second quarter and kept the game tight. The Warriors tied the score with under 10 seconds remaining but Morehead was able to quickly break a press for a Koontz layup for the win. Chance Brown led Morehead with 17 points.
Markus Hariston scored 16 to pace the Warriors (2-1).
Gretna 50, Bassett 47: Jason Patrick scored 16 points as the Hawks edged the Bengals (2-1) in a non-district matchup in Bassett.
The game was back and forth throughout as no team outscored the other by more than two points in any quarter. The Hawks were able to convert on crucial free throws down the stretch to perserve their lead. Howard Slayton and Rondae Hall contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Andre Fuller led the Bengals with 17 points.
Girls' games
G.W. Danville 61, Patrick Henry 26: Shana Price scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Eagles (2-0) to an easy non-district victory over the Patriots (2-1) in Danville.
The Eagles owned a 37-15 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Tanisha Durham and Keeda Hale scored eight points each to lead the Patriots.
Cave Spring JV 52, Roanoke Catholic 10: Laura Nasca scored 18 points as the junior varsity Knights (2-0) picked up a non-district victory over the Celtics (1-4) on Roanoke Catholic's home floor.
Nasca and Sherri Rickman, who added 14 points, created several second-shot opportunities as the Knights outrebounded the Celtics 40-18. The Knights pressure defense also came up with 34 takeaways.
Point guard Christy Hinman led the Celtics with six points and seven rebounds.
