ALDERMAN, Edna Amanda Hodge, 81, of Barren Springs, died Sunday, December 8, 1996. Funeral 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Riverview Church of God. Visitation Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church. Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

ALLNOCH, Harriett Farley Riggs, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 9, 1996. She was born in Narrows, Va., the daughter of the late Walter B. and Mary Louise Farley. She was preceded in death by her brother, Homer C. Farley; and husbands, Adna A. Riggs and Gerald L. Allnoch. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Thomas P. Day, Salem; sons and daughters-in-law, A. Wayne and Vickie Riggs, San Diego, Calif., Ralph L. and Margaret Riggs, Salem , Robert B. Riggs, Lynchburg; a sister, Beulah T. Potts, Richland Center, Wisc.; also surviving are six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements are being handled at Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.

BAKER, Guy Grover, 74, of Ripplemead, died Monday morning, December 9, 1996, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Born in Alleghany County on July 19, 1922, he was a son of the late Jake and Mae Brown Baker. Guy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a retired employee of Hoechst-Celanese Celco Plant with 46 years of service, and following his conversion became a faithful member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Elma Lee Trout Baker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wallace and Linda Doyle Baker of Ripplemead, Webster and Tammie Chambers Baker of Pearisburg; five grandchildren, Rob Baker of Portland, Ore., Amy and husband, Randy Mutter, of Roanoke, Stacey and husband, Marvin Farley, of Ripplemead, Krista Baker of Los Angeles, Calif., Adam Baker of Pearisburg; and one stepgranddaughter, Beth East of Pearisburg; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Triston Mutter of Roanoke; one sister, Virginia Hensley of Covington; and a best friend, Tom Martin of Ripplemead. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, December 11, 1996, at 2 p.m. in Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead with the Pastor, the Rev. Shahn Wilburn, and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

CAVINESS, Gary Edward, 48, of Dublin, formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, December 8, 1996, at his residence. He was the owner/operator of the Lawn Magic Super Vac Service and was a member of the Christiansburg Moose Lodge #1470. He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey Edward Caviness; and father-in-law, Warren Morris. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Morris Caviness of the home; a daughter, Jessica Valene Caviness of Johnson City, Tenn.; two stepsons, Warren Mills of Marion, Jay Mills of Austin, Texas; two stepgrandchildren, Lauren Mills, Michael Warren Mills; mother, Anna Spencer Caviness, of Route 1, Max Meadows; a brother and sister-in-law, Randall and Vickie Caviness of Route 1, Max Meadows; mother-in-law, Margaret Morris of Wytheville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret Anne and Dwight Grubb of Wytheville; special friends James and Peggy Haynes of Dublin; a niece and three nephews, Randa Lynn Caviness, Gary Allen Caviness, Danny Grubb, Darrell Grubb. CHANEY, Roosevelt, 64, of Ferrum, passed away Sunday, December 8, 1996 at home. He was predeceased by his parents, Melvin Lawrence Chaney and Etta Mae Wright Worley; a brother, Herman L. Chaney; a sister, Marlene Chaney; and an infant daughter, Theresa Ann Chaney; an infant granddaughter, Tiffany Michelle Chaney; niece, Lisa Foley. Surviving are his wife, Margaret G. Chaney of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Margie C. and Gene T. Angle of Rocky Mount; sons, Roosevelt Junior Chaney, Michael Todd Chaney both of Ferrum, Barry K. Chaney and his fiancee, Donna Reed and her daughter, Kaydale of Floyd, Gregory D. Chaney and his fiancee, Regina Minnix of Ferrum; grandsons, Toby L. Chaney and Brandon L. COFFMAN, Clarence E., (``Micky''), 75, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 9, 1996. He was a member of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, retired from Roanoke Southern States Corp., and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Air Force. He was a volunteer for the L.O.A. and delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years. He was the son of the late W. K. and Ida Garst Coffman. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Percy Russell and William Coffman; and a sister, Mary Bryant. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Georgia L. Coffman; sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Bonnie Coffman; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and David Argabright; grandchildren, Stephanie Coffman, Bradley and Brittany Agrabright; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna Duncan and Virginia and Robert Prease; brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. and Carolyn Coffman; brother-in-law, Melvin Bryant; sisters-in-law, Grace Coffman and Gertrude Coffman; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Wednesday, December 11, 1996 at Lotz Salem Chapel with Dr. John W. (Jack) Lowe Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. EUNICE, Joseph A., 79 of Roanoke passed away suddenly on Monday, December 9, 1996 in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Assaid Eunice. Surviving are a daughter, Donna Gilbert, Roanoke; two sons, Michael Eunice, Richmond and David Eunice, Va. Beach; seven grandchildren; brother, Andrew Eunice, Roanoke; sister, Virginia Mullins, Salem; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Reverend Msgr Assad Awad officiating. Interment will follow in Saint Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery. HALE, Mitchell Alan, 37, of Newport, died Sunday, December 8, 1996, in Pearisburg. Mr. Hale was born on July 9, 1959 in Portsmouth, and was a son of Franklin and Wilma Matney Hale of Sevierville, Tenn. Mr. Hale was a graduate of the Southwest Virginia Community College and Radford University. He had taught in the Giles County Elementary Schools for five years and was an 8th grade football and track coach. Mr. Hale was a member of the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church in Pearisburg, and a Royal Rangers Outpost Commander, Outpost #151. Besides his parents he is survived by his wife, Monica Dawn Grey Hale of Newport; one son, Aaron Lee Hale of Newport; one daughter, Heather Nicole Hale of Newport; two brothers, Christopher Hale of Tazewell and Brian Paul Hale of Spanishburg, W.Va.; two nieces; one nephew; two grandmothers, Mae Blenkenship Hale of Tazewell and Osa Lester Matney of Sevierville, Tenn; and his father and mother-in-law, Don and Ruth Grey of Christiansburg. Funeral services will be conducted at the Faith Temple in Pearisburg at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. David Lawson officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. HARMAN, Millie Rose, 62, of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 7, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B. Harman. She was involved with private home nursing care. She was an active member of the Maranetha Ministries. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy H. Vest and Joanne Duncan; one son, Robert Junior Harman; six grandchildren, Angie, Tam my, David, Benji, Tracy and Amber; one great-grandson, Jonathan; one sister, Dorothy Allbright; and two brothers, Buddy Rose and Sam Rose. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel, 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 1996, with the Rev. Roger Graves officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. HORSLEY, Verna Catherine Wood, 81, of Roanoke County, passed away Monday, December 9, 1996, at her home. She was predeceased by her husbands, Charles T. (``Doc'') Horsley (in 1995), and Douglas R. Rodgers (in 1968). Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Rodgers Smith and Ramona Rodgers Painter (formerly Shank); stepdaughters, Rebecca H. Richardson and Sandra H. Clower; grandsons, Kenneth R. Smith and Douglas A. Shank; her mother, Avis Wood, age 104; sisters, Doris Petefish, June Holt, and Susan Good; one brother, Llewellyn Wood; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, December 11 at 12 noon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Salem with the Father Gregory Kandt officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Roanoke. The family will receive friends at the John M. HUFFMAN, Margaret Mae Pursley, 82, of Fincastle, passed away Monday, December 9, 1996. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Everette R. Huffman and one brother, Jesse S. Pursley. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Faye Huffman of Morristown, Tenn., James and Lynda Huffman of Fincastle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ina and Donald Pack of Radford, Nina and Harvey Lemmon of Woodbury, Ga.; eight grandchildren, J. R. and Julia Huffman, Jimmy, Tommy, and Connie Huffman, Ashley Pack, Donnie and Jonathan Lemmon; one great-grandchild, Spencer Huffman. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 1996 at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Hutchins and the Rev. Owen McCloud officiating. JOHNSON, James Rufus, 71, of Trinity, Texas, formerly of Narrows, died Saturday, December 7, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Narrows on December 20, 1924, and was the son of the late Samuel Austin and Sallie Virginia Shumate Johnson. He was a retired Chief Master Sergeant, having served for 36 1/2 years in the Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II and served in Korea and in Vietnam. He was employed by Gulf Oil Company. He was preceded in death by his only son, Michael Johnson, of Anchorage, Alaska; and a sister, Virginia Johnson Coburn; two brothers, Raymond and Samuel A. Johnson Jr., all of Narrows. He is survived by his wife, Darlene P. Johnson, Trinity, Texas; two sisters, Mary J. Ballard and Helen J. Saphir, both of Narrows; a sister-in-law, Beulah Johnson, Narrows; nieces, Sarah Lynn Kageals, Salem, Katrina Clyburn, Roanoke; nephews, Raymond Johnson, Charleston, S.C., Randall Johnson, Hampton, Ronald Johnson, Princeton, W.Va., Randy Ballard, Chapel Hill, N.C. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. James Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by the V.F.W. and the American Legion Post of Giles County. PRICE, Dorothy Caperton Stephens, of Salem, died Monday, December 9, 1996. She was the wife of Ray K. Price Sr. Mrs. Price, a Salem native and long time private music teacher in Salem, was a past president of the Salem Music Club. She was very active in the Thursday Morning Music Club in which she held several offices. She was a former member of the Executive Board of the Roanoke Valley SPCA and a life time member of Salem Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Roanoke Music Teacher's Association. She is survived by her husband and one son, William G. Caperton; four stepchildren, R. Kenneth Price Jr., John B. Price, Margaret P. Perky, Elizabeth Price Gentry; several stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 11, 1996, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, Salem, with Dr. B. Conrad Johnston officiating. UMBERGER, James Curtis, (``Jimmy''), 79, of 915 N. Jefferson Ave., Pulaski, died Monday, December 9, 1996, in Pulaski Health Care Center. Born in Wytheville November 16, 1917, he was the son of the late John Stuart Umberger and Lucy Felty Umberger. He was retired from the Pulaski Post Office after serving for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Medical Detachment of the 116th Infantry of the 29th Division, U.S. Army. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He is survived by his wife, Dicie Combs Umberger; two brothers, Charles E. Umberger, Dublin, William K. Umberger, Princeton, W.Va.; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Albert, Roanoke. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Thorn Spring Cemetery with Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Visiting will be any time after 2 p.m. Tuesday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home. WARD, Nancy Whiting, 60, of Route 1, New Castle, died Sunday, December 8, 1996. She is survived by her husband, Howard Ward; two daughters and son-in-law, Ann and David Bostic, Amy Ward; a son, Jeremy Ward; a sister, Dorothy Thompson, all of New Castle.
