KNIGHTS HANDLE VIKINGS

Cave Spring continued its impressive early season run with a 63-48 road win at Group AA power Northside in a boys' basketball game Tuesday night.

Cave Spring (3-0) was led by 6-6 senior Alex Phillips, who scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the second quarter. Junior Corey Paxton added 13 points, including seven while Northside was on a mild surge in the third quarter.

Spencer Richardson, with 10 points, was the only double-figure scorer for the Vikings (0-2).

Lord Botetourt 62, North Cross 35: Sean Osbourne and Michael Yates chipped in 17 points each to lead the Cavaliers to an easy non-district victory over the Raiders (1-3) in Daleville.

Jason Hump added 10 points for the Cavaliers (3-0).

G.W.-Danville 73, William Fleming 53: In Danville, Charles Stephens had 21 points for the Eagles, who started slowly without All-Group AAA selection Tyrone Robertson, but pulled away after the first quarter.

Percy Pannell had 13 points to lead the Colonels (2-2). George Washington-Danville (2-1) hopes to have Robertson, taking a break after last Saturday's football state championships, as early as Friday night.

James River 58, Shawsville 50: In Buchanan, senior forward Travis Blankenship scored 13 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter for the Knights (1-3). Chris Graham had 17 points to lead the Shawnees (0-2).

Auburn 67, Roanoke Catholic 46: Adam Loveday scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Eagles gave Auburn coach Kevin Harris his 100th victory. Terron Reid scored a game-high 27 points for Roanoke Catholic (1-4).

Girls

G.W.-Danville 51, William Fleming 48: The Colonels (2-2) scored only five points in the fourth quarter as unbeaten George Washington-Danville overcame an eight-point deficit. Shanna Price had 20 points and Shree Taylor contributed 14 for the Eagles (4-0). Renita Walker had 11 points for William Fleming.

Carlisle 48, North Cross 44: Brooke Holyfield scored 26 points in leading Carlisle to a non-district victory over North Cross. Holyfield did most of her damage from the free-throw line, converting on 14 of 19 attempts. Jennifer Evans scored 11 in the Cavaliers (1-3) victory.

Michele Hamilton paced North Cross (0-3) with 19 points.

Roanoke Valley Christian 62, Patrick Henry 25: The Eagles (3-1) had more points in the second quarter than Patrick Henry (2-2) scored in the game, getting 15 points each from Gina Guthrie and Tiffany Dobbs.
