TIGERS, ASTROS MAKE BIG TRADE

On another busy off-season day, Randy Smith, the Detroit Tigers' general manager, made a potential 10-player trade Tuesday with the Houston Astros, where his father, Tal Smith, is team president.

In Detroit's largest deal since 1957, the Tigers acquired center fielder Brian Hunter, shortstop Orlando Miller, closer Todd Jones and right-hander Doug Brocail for catcher Brad Ausmus, left-handers C.J. Nitkowski and Trever Miller, right-hander Jose Lima and infielder Daryle Ward. The Tigers also will get either another player or cash.

Meanwhile, Mel Rojas signed with the Chicago Cubs three days after becoming a free agent, getting a deal that gives him a $250,000 signing bonus and $4.5 million in each of the next three seasons.

Florida signed Dennis Cook for $1.7 million over two years. Cook, 34, was 5-2 with a 4.09 ERA with Texas last season.

* Charles White, USC's Heisman Trophy winner in 1979, and Pitt defensive end Hugh Green were among 12 former players and coaches inducted into college football's Hall of Fame.

Also inducted were Bob Ferguson (Ohio State), Frank Merritt (Army), John Michels (Tennessee), Bob Pellegrini (Maryland), Pat Richter (Wisconsin), Jerry Robinson (UCLA), James Saxton (Texas), Jerry Tubbs (Oklahoma), Marc Wilson (BYU), and coach Henry ``Red'' Sanders (Vanderbilt, UCLA).

Florida quarterback Danny Wuerrfel received the Draddy Award, sometimes referred to as the ``Academic Heisman.'' Virginia's Tiki Barber joined Wuerffel as one of 16 scholarship winners.
