With the schools' storied rivalry, a Giles-Narrows matchup always promises to be exciting.
Tuesday night's game was no exception as Joe Shipbaugh scored a career-high 33 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead host Narrows to a 80-77 overtime win over Giles before more than 800 spectators.
The teams played closely throughout the game, with Giles (2-1) leading 33-27 at halftime. Narrows (3-0) turned up the defensive pressure in the second half, using a press and man-to-man defense to wear down the Spartans.
However, Narrows was down 64-61 with 40 seconds to go. After Shipbaugh hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 64, Giles' Adam Jones retaliated to put the Spartans ahead 66-64 with six seconds left. The Green Wave then got the ball out of bounds and Dallas St. Clair sank a layup as time expired.
It was a see-saw game in overtime before Shipbaugh hit a 3-pointer for Narrows. He then got a steal, was fouled and made two free throws to put Narrows up by two. St. Clair made 1 of 2 free-throw attempts to reach the final margin.
