FERRUM HONORS FALL ATHLETES

Junior tight end Mike Souma (William Fleming High School) was named Ferrum's offensive player of the year and senior defensive back Tyrone Allen was chosen defensive player of the year in football at the Panthers' fall sports banquet.

Senior linebacker Kevin Slough (Franklin County) received the Big Green Award in memory of seven Ferrum football players and coach Rick Tolley who perished in a Marshall University plane crash in 1970.

In volleyball, senior outside hitter Kristi Persinger and junior setter Susan Reagan were chosen co-most valuable players. Freshman middle hitter Melisa Buchanan was named most improved and freshman Charlee Johnson received the Lady Panther Award for pride, spirit and dedication.

In men's soccer, junior midfielder Michael Carey was named MVP. Freshman forward Chris Hewitt (Cave Spring) was chosen offensive player of the year and junior midfielder Damien Morris and freshman back Stewart Zenorini were selected co-defensive players of the year. Junior back Dennis Floyd won the Coach's Award.

In women's soccer, senior back Shannon Sayre was chosen MVP and defensive player of the year. Sophomore Hilary Wagner was named offensive player of the year, and senior midfielder Deborah Carter earned the Coach's Award.

In other sports news in the region:

* Washington and Lee sophomore Mikel Parker has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro All-America third team. Parker is the second W&L player ever named to an All-America soccer team and the first since Bill Boyle in 1956.

* The Virginia ticket office has a limited number of ticket books available for the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament semifinals and championship games Friday and Saturday at the University of Richmond.

Each book is $35 and includes tickets for both rounds at the University of Richmond Stadium. Call (800) 542-8821 for tickets or go to the UVa ticket office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

* Martinsville Speedway will be the site for the final stop of the Allison Legacy Series inaugural season Saturday. The Allison cars are five-eighth scale versions of today's Winston Cup cars, powered by 120-horsepower Mazda engines.

Racing will include a 30-lap exhibition event for series regulars and a 15-lap race for rookies beginning at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but the speedway will collect toys to be distributed by area social services departments.
