AMA takes no stand on partial abortions
ATLANTA - The nation's largest doctors' group declined Wednesday to take a stand on a controversial type of late-term abortion that some federal lawmakers have been trying to ban.
The American Medical Association said it wants to study what opponents call partial-birth abortions, in which a baby is partly delivered through the birth canal and killed by removal of its brain tissue.
The 447 delegates to the AMA's midterm meeting asked its scientists and ethicists to study partial-birth abortions and report back to the group at its annual meeting in June in Chicago.

Colo. congressman indicted; lies alleged
SALEM, Ore. - Rep. Wes Cooley, a GOP freshman who dropped his re-election bid this year after being accused of lying about his background, was indicted on charges he falsely claimed in official state voter guides that he had served in Korea.
The 64-year-old congressman could get up to 10 years in prison and $200,000 in fines if convicted of twice making false statements.
Separately, a federal grand jury is investigating whether Cooley lied about his background when he got married so his wife could fraudulently continue to collect benefits as a Marine widow.
