ARRINGTON, Jessie Mae, 88, of Roanoke passed away Tuesday, December 10,1996. She was born in Roanoke County to the late James and Roxie Draper Hairston. She retired from Hotel Roanoke. Survivors include her son, Paul (Rowena) Arrington of Roanoke; a devoted granddaughter, Audrey Arrington, Roanoke; two grandsons, Paul E. (Debbie) Arrington, Jr., New Hampshire and Stanley J. Arrington, Roanoke; three sisters, Ruby Hill, Roanoke, Mamie Hairston, Washington, D.C. and Dollie Littlejohn, Omaha, Nebraska; one brother, James Hairston, Danville; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Hylton, who was very devoted, and Ida Mae Arrington, both of Roanoke; three devoted nieces, Marian Gray, Frances Bean and Ann Jefferson, all of Roanoke; two devoted neighbors, Reva Jones and Alma Jones; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family of Jessie Mae Arrington would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Health Care Professionals who took care of her, including Dr. Waybright and the M.I.C.U staff at Lewis-Gale Hospital, Dr. Gary O'Hagan, Heather and staff at Lewis-Gale Family Practice, Estelle Wade, Annette Clark and staff at the Adult Care Center. BARKER, Emma S., 88, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 11, 1996, in a local nursing home. She is survived by her husband, Oliver Lee Barker; daughter and son-in-law, Grace B. and Ivan T. Poff Sr., all of Roanoke; granddaughter, Beth F. Aldama; grandsons, Jason S. Poff and Tommy Poff, all of Roanoke; great-granddaughter, Ashli Aldama; sister and brothers, Annie Alford, Ford Spinks, Winston Spinks, Z. L. Spinks, Bryson Spinks, all of Alabama. Fune ral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 1 p.m. Friday, December 13, 1996 with the Rev. Branan Thompson Jr., and the Rev. Danny Dugan officiating. CANTRELL, Verna, 84, of Ross, Ohio, died Tuesday evening, December 10, 1996, at Woodridge Retirement Center. Born in McRoberts, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Spencer and Marl Reynolds Johnson. She married Garcia Cantrell February 19, 1937. He preceded her in death in February 1993. She was a member of the Ross First Baptist Church, Ross, Ohio. She taught school in Norton, Va. for many years. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Wallace, Ross, Ohio, Jane Brookman, Boones Mill; one sister, Pina Wilfong, Johnson City, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cody F., Edward and William Johnson. Funeral services will be at Charles C. CURTIS, Bernice Clarice, 63, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, December 10, 1996. She was born on August 8, 1933 in Gary, Indiana. She was an employee of the Graduate School at V.P.I. & S.U. for 25 years, and a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Surviving are her husband, George Curtis, Blacksburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Forrest and Nancy Curtis, Christiansburg, Craig and Linda Curtis, Martinsville, Mark and Nancy Curtis, Virginia Beach, Lynn and Cathy Curtis, Hampton; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Dean Walls, Blacksburg; 12 grandchildren, Jada and Chad Curtis, John Hayden, Charles and James Curtis, Sky Curtis, Ryan and Cassandra Curtis, Brian, Russell, Taylor and Whitney Walls; also a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Mariam Gregory, Merrillville, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews. DUNCAN, Bonnie Jean Crane, 54, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Radford, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 1996. She was the owner of Basics & Classics Furniture Store. Survivors include her husband, Bob (Robert Lee) Duncan of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, Robert Duane and Michael Ryan Duncan, both of Newport; one daughter, Mrs. Regina Delgado of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her parents, Edgar and Bertha Crane of Dublin; one brother, Jerry Crane of Dublin; two sisters, Mrs. Linda Duncan of Radford, and Mrs. Patricia Woodyard of Pulaski; and five grandsons. Peters, Riner; two granddaughters and husbands, Alva and Ken Phillips, Riner, Bonnie and Robert Dillard, Roanoke; two great-grandchildren, Valerie Phillips, Nicole K. HARRELL, James Curtis, 55, of Moneta, died Tuesday, December 10, 1996 at Carillion Roanoke Community Hospital. He was born in Athens, Georgia on February 19, 1941 a son of the late Raymond C. Harrell and Gwynn Barnett Harrell. He was a retired truck driver and was a communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Kaufmann Harrell; a son, Michael E. Donner, Moneta; two daughters, Jennifer Goad, Moneta, and Linda Olson, McMinnville, Oregon; a sister, Janice H. Day, Winder, Ga.; three grandchildren, Patricia Ann Donner, Samantha Renae Goad and Taylor Marie Donner. Private family services will be held at a later time. Arrangements are being handled by Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.

HOLDREN, Betty Loving, 52, of Vinton, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 1996. Surviving are husband, William E. HOOVER, Emma Foster, 83, of 140 Lawson Rd., Martinsville, died Wednesday, December 11, 1996, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oland M. Hoover. She was born in Franklin County July 12, 1913, daughter of the late Robert Harden Foster and Mollie Janney Foster. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She is survived by daughters, Madeline C. Hall of Rocky Mount, Fern C. Lawson of Martinsville; sons-in-law, J. B. Lawson of Martinsville, J. Wesley Hall of Rocky Mount; two grandchildren, Rita L. Dillon of Martinsville, Derwin L. Hall of Rocky Mount; great-grandchildren, Joseph Dillon of Martinsville, Emily Dillon of Martinsville; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, John O. Carter. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at McKee Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Ramsey officiating. HUNDLEY, Hartwell Elbert Sr., 88, of Hillsville, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 1996, at his home. He was born September 2, 1908 in Carroll County. Mr. Hundley was a life-long resident of Hillsville and the youngest person to serve as Mayor of Hillsville. He is survived by his wife, Ada Branscomb Hundley; son and daughter-in-law, Hartwell Elbert and Ann Hundley, Pearisburg; sister, Ethel O'Brian of Washington, D.C.; three grandsons, Keith Hundley, Todd Hundley, Scott Hundley; four great -grandsons. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 1996, at Vaughan-Guynn McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with Rev. Charles Mackey officiating. Interment will be in Liberty Cemetery.

JONES, Dorothy H., 76, of Penhook, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 1996, at Eldercare of Franklin County. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Jones; her parents, Jesse C. and Ergie D. Hubbard; and a sister, Opal Mabry. Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law, John David and Serena Jones, Robert (Bobby) and Carolyn Jones, all of Penhook; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Floyd Roberts of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Harold Stroupe of Rochester Hills, Mich.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, J. C. and Margaret Hubbard, Thomas and Patsy Hubbard, all of Rocky Mount, George and Oleane Hubbard of Blacksburg; five grandchildren, Tina, Jason, Robbie, Jessica and Marybeth Jones; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Lillie Turner of Eldercare. JONES, James Edward, 57, of Freeport, N.Y., and formerly of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 1996. Funeral services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at the Emanuel Tabernacle Baptist Church, Apostolic Faith. Elder Samuel English will officiate, assisted by Pastor Joseph M. Jones, brother of the deceased. LAMBERT, Inez May, of Charleston, W.Va., died Tuesday, December 10, 1996, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, W.Va., af ter a short illness. She is survived by a daughter, Lela Wilshere, Dunbar, W.Va.; a son, Charles Lambert, Daleville; sisters, Ruth Bourgeois, Stow, Ohio, and Eloise Gordon, St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers, Charles White, Stow, Ohio, James Hoyt White, Stow, Ohio, Ferrell White, Sherman, W.Va., and Dick White, Monroe Falls, Ohio. She was a housewife, former school guard and school cook at Glenwood Grade School, Charleston, W.Va. She was a resident of Charleston for over 50 years, and a charter member of the Bible Center Church. She has four grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 2 to 8 p.m., and the service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar with Pastor Tim Valentine officiating. LINK, Larry D., 67, of 240 Magnolia Dr., Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, December 11, 1996 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. He was a native of Floyd County, Va. and had lived in Bristol for 46 years. He was retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad for 18 years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and a member of First Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Glenna Link; two daughters, Diane Campbell of Blountville, Tenn. and Barbara Gott of Bristol, Tennessee; one son, Larry Link, Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.; one brother, A. L. Link of Bristol, Tenn.; two half sisters, Helen Conduff of Salem, Va. and Violet Forbes of Roanoke, Va.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Larry D. Link will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Church (Head of the River) in Copperhill, Va., with Elder Hale Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Restvale Cemetery, Copperhill. POWELL, John Robert Bernadine, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 1996 in Community Hospital. Mr. Powell was born in Roanoke March 22, 1917, the eldest brother of seven children and was a retired contractor. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Powell of Washington, D.C., their eldest sister, Gladys Armstrong of Teaneck, N.J. and sister, Georgette Henry of Washington, D.C. He is survived by two daughters, Camilla Bernice (Powell) Mackey, Virginia Beach and Robia Johnette Powell, Roanoke; one grandson, Brian Keith Mackey, Virginia Beach; one brother and his wife, Eddie S. and Maxine Powell, Salem; two sisters, Viola Ruth Woods, Chesterfield Co. and Reginald Harris of Roanoke; one very dear, close friend of the family of many years, Eloise W. Saunders; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Williams Memorial Park with Dr. Kenneth B. Wright will officiate. PRESTON, Maggie Johnson, of Rocky Mount, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 1996 at Eldercare of Franklin County. She was a lifetime resident of Franklin County and a member of the Morningside Missionary Baptist Church. She leaves behind a sister, Virginia C. Patterson, Rocky Mount; grandson, S. Jerome Johnson Sr. (Regina), Rocky Mount; daughter-in-law, Florella H. Johnson, Rocky Mount; granddaughter, Nellie Tanks (Davi d), Rocky Mount; three great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. WADE, Margie P., 79, of Roanoke died Tuesday, December 10, 1996 in Lewis Gale Hospital. She was a native of Barren Springs, Va. and had resided most of her life in Washington, D.C. and recently moved to Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Jewell Wade. Survivors include one son, Paul J. Wade, Moneta; grandchildren, Paula Wade, Salem, Michael Wade, Lewisburg, W. Va., Jacqueline Cannon, Cleveland, Ohio; great-grandson, Silas William Wade; sisters, Claudia Hubbard, Rosa Richards and Laura Caligan, all of Salem, Bessie Bassetti, Alexandria; nieces and nephews, Perry Caligan, Susan Taylor, Roseann Brown, all of Salem, Larry Caligan, Martinsburg, W.Va., Eugene Taylor, Baltimore, Md., Jacqueline Moore, Clinton Park, N.Y. WHITEHEAD, Mary Hurt, 94, of Ferrum, died Tuesday, December 10, 1996. She was the daughter of the late John Kemper and Lelia Angle Hurt. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Estelle Whitehead Olson; sister and brother, Ruth H. Ingram and Frank B. Hurt. Mrs. Whitehead was the proprietor of Ferrum Drug Company for many years, and a resident counselor at Bassett Hall, Ferrum College, from 1965-1980. After retiring from Ferrum College she was an active volunteer in the Franklin Memorial Hospital auxiliary. Mrs. Whitehead was a long-time member of St. James Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria W. and Cletis Burnett of Rocky Mount; one son and daughter-in-law, Royal (Buck) and Evelyn Whitehead of Ferrum; six grandchildren, Ken Burnett, Eden, N.C., Lynn Hughes, Chester, Gail Shirley, Richmond, David Bray Whitehead, Oceanside, Calif., Michael Whitehead, Newport Beach, Calif., Mark Whitehead, Las Vegas, Nev.; nine great-grandchildren.
