The Mill Mountain Zoo's effort to establish a Siberian Tiger breeding facility is getting help from Roanoke-area students, who have raised more than $500 for the project.

A fifth-grade class at Mount Pleasant Elementary, third-graders from Westside Elementary and Glenvar High School's Student Council Association and faculty are contributing by buying stuffed "tiger tails" and collection coins.

The Roanoke Valley Children's Fund recently granted $1,139 to Mill Mountain Zoo to support educational outreach programs for the children at the Northwest Child Development Center in Roanoke.

The grant will be used to teach children about wildlife and habitats, including visits to the zoo and hands-on encounters with animals.

The Brandon Oaks Life Care Retirement Community in Roanoke recently was awarded the Virginia Green Community Award at the sixth annual Virginia Urban Forest Conference.

The award recognizes communities that establish long-range plans to protect and improve their forest resources.

First Union National Bank's annual "Banking on Books" project has collected more than 2,500 books from area residents to be donated to local schools. Books were collected at First Union branches in the Roanoke Valley.

St. Philip Evangelical Lutheran Church in Roanoke has received an award of $1,520 from Lutheran Brotherhood of Minneapolis to help in its efforts to clean up after Hurricane Fran went through last September.
