Library offers help for Internet novices
"First Look @ the Internet," a presentation for Internet novices, will be held at the Roanoke County Hollins Branch Library Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The program will cover vocabulary, navigation and searches for those new to the Internet. Call 561-8024 to register.
Salvation Army holds basketball tourney
The 12th annual Salvation Army Holiday Basketball Classic will be held Jan. 2, 3 and 4 at the Community Center on Dale Avenue.
Both girls and boys teams are eligible for this single elimination tournament. Biddy and Midget games will be played on weeknights starting at 6.

Celebrate the holidays at the zoo Saturday
"A Holiday Celebration with the Animals" will be held at the Mill Mountain Zoo Saturday from 1 to 8 p.m. Many events are planned, including the Zoo festival of lights, a live performance by Roanoke school choirs, face painting, and a visit from Santa. Children may have their pictures taken with Santa by bringing a toy for donation to the Toys for Tots campaign.

Free long-distance calls for seniors
An annual event allowing senior citizens to call anywhere in the world free of charge will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Merrill Lynch offices at 114 Market St. in downtown Roanoke.
Appointments are not necessary, and assistance in reaching oversees operators will be available. The program is sponsored by Merrill Lynch and the LOA Area Agency on Aging's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. For more information call 345-0451.
Harrison museum celebrates Kwanzaa
The Harrison Museum of African American Culture will present its annual Kwanzaa celebration Dec. 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.
In addition to an introduction to Kwanzaa, the evening's activities will include music and storytelling. Families are welcome to share stories.
Kwanzaa is the Swahili word for "first," and the celebration, created by Maulana Karenga, signifies the first fruits of the harvest. Many Americans of African descent celebrate the holiday from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
