Celebrate the holidays at the zoo Saturday

"A Holiday Celebration with the Animals" will be held at the Mill Mountain Zoo Saturday from 1 to 8 p.m. Many events are planned, including the Zoo festival of lights, a live performance by Roanoke school choirs, face painting, and a visit from Santa. Children may have their pictures taken with Santa by bringing a toy for donation to the Toys for Tots campaign.

Free long-distance calls for seniors

An annual event allowing senior citizens to call anywhere in the world free of charge will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Merrill Lynch offices at 114 Market St. in downtown Roanoke.

Appointments are not necessary, and assistance in reaching oversees operators will be available. The program is sponsored by Merrill Lynch and the LOA Area Agency on Aging's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. For more information call 345-0451.

Recycling changes in Botetourt County

The Botetourt County Public Works department has announced that mixed paper will no longer be accepted at the county's recycling drop-off centers. Only newspapers, without inserts, will be accepted. For further information call Kurt Hodgen at 473-8316.
