THE TIPOFF

THEY'RE BACK: The Roanoke College Preparatory Division Children's Choir, recently returned from its performance as the official choir for the 1996 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C, will present its annual Christmas concert Saturday and Sunday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Roanoke.

The choir is actually three choirs of 170 children between ages 8 and 18. Its Christmas Lights concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday will include classical and popular carols, plus a parent chorus and sibling choir. Admission will cost $3 for adults or $1 for children 12 and younger. Call 375-2096.

LEAFLESS: Have a little fun, soak up some fresh air and sunshine and learn how to identify trees, even during bare-branched winter months, and how to identify and read animal signs in the winter wilderness. Join the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park for a leisurely 1.3-mile walk along the Turtle Island Trail, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.

Parking costs $1, but the walk is free. A minimum of five nature lovers are needed. To register, call Jeffrey Ervin at 586-6846.

BOUT TIME: Clubs and teams from Roanoke, Blacksburg, Grundy, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Charlotte, Tennessee and West Virginia will compete Saturday in 15 bouts and 45 rounds of amateur boxing competition. Ages will range from 8 to 9 in the Bantam Division to a minimum of 33 in the Masters Division. Blues Hangover will provide the music.

Doors will open 5:30 p.m. Saturday for the Winter War at the Valley Center in Roanoke. Tickets range from $5 advance general admission to $50 for a VIP table of four on the day of the event. Tickets are on sale at Shenandoah Restaurant, 2905 Shenandoah Ave. Call 343-5669.

LET THERE BE LIGHTS: More than 15,000 of them, to be exact, all turning on at 5 tonight at the Elks National Home in Bedford. The aglow show will continue 5:30-10 nightly, through Dec. 31. Call 586-8232.

PARLOR PEEKS: The Old Southwest Holiday Parlor Tours will feature five homes, one business and two condominiums into which $10 will let you peer, plus get you some refreshments and entertainment.
