HIGHLANDERS' WALKER MOVING UP

Anthony Walker scored 16 points to move into fourth place on the Radford career scoring list as the Highlanders routed Concord 103-55 in a men's college basketball game at the Dedmon Center on Thursday night.

Walker now has 1,315 points. He surpassed Tyrone Travis (1989-94) and David Smith ('81-85) at 1,313.

Radford (5-3) went on a 14-2 run to start the game and stretched that margin to as many as 50 points in the second half. Concord (2-5) was limited to 23 of 72 (31.9 percent) from the field and committed 29 turnovers.

Five other players scored in double figures as Radford improved to 4-1 on its five-game homestand. Eric Bowens scored 12 points and Corey Reed, Kevin Robinson, Marquiz Williamson and Chibi Johnson added 10 points apiece.

Former William Fleming standout Sterling Tate had 15 points for Concord, and former Virginia Tech player Kelly Mann added 10 points and nine rebounds.

``It's nice to get a game like this,'' Radford coach Ron Bradley said. ``The guys played with a lot of confidence. We've had so many close games. We've been very tired lately. I'm glad this one went this way.''

In other college basketball:

Maryland 77, Georgia Tech 63: In College Park, Md., the Terrapins held the Yellow Jackets to six field goals in the first half and improved to 7-0 for the first time in 21 years.

Keith Booth scored 24 points and Laron Profit 18 for Maryland (7-0, 1-0 ACC), who built a 20-point lead in the opening 11 minutes and cruised to their 25th consecutive December victory at home.

Matt Harpring had 21 points for Georgia Tech (4-2, 0-1). The Yellow Jackets made 6 of 24 field-goal attempts in the first half and had only three baskets with 13 minutes elapsed.

The defending ACC regular-season champions never cut the gap below 10 points in the second half in suffering their second straight lopsided loss. The Yellow Jackets fell to Temple by 16 Saturday.

Massachusetts 69, Drexel 48: In Amherst, Mass., Charlton Clarke scored 17 points as the Minutemen overcame a long first-half scoring famine to turn back the Dragons.

UMass (3-4) went 81/2 minutes between its first and second baskets but still managed to lead 27-21 at halftime. In the second half, the Minutemen used a 15-2 run in the first four minutes to seal the victory.

The surge by UMass included back-to-back 3-pointers by Edgar Padilla. Lari Ketner added 13 points, followed by Carmelo Travieso with 11.

While the Minutemen were in their drought, Drexel (3-3) scored 12 straight points to go in front 14-2. But the Minutemen then scored the next 10 to start their comeback.

Jeff Myers had 12 points and Joe Lindermen 11 for Drexel.

Note

FREEBIE: Radford University athletic director Greig Denny has announced that all spectators will be admitted free of charge to Sunday's women's basketball game against Marshall. Gametime is 2 p.m. at the Dedmon Center.

``We just wanted a way to show our fans how much they mean to us,'' said Denny, who is in his first year as RU athletic director. ``It just seemed right to give them some sort of Christmas gift this close to the holidays.''
