During the Depression, when Bill and Neva Hurt of Roanoke were young, Christmas was a much simpler affair.
There were no Tickle-Me Elmos. No Nintendo 64s. No Power Rangers or Cabbage Patch dolls. Many families had trouble putting food on the table, so Christmas gifts were often seen as a luxury.
But somehow, according to Hurt, his parents found a way to make Christmas happen.
"I don't know how they did it," he said. "But they somehow managed to put up a tree, even though they didn't have much money.
"Santa always came to our house with nuts, candy and even a gift."
Since both of their parents sacrificed so much to make sure their children had a joyful Christmas, the Hurts donated to the Good Neighbors Fund to honor and thank them.
"Both of us were fortunate to have caring parents," Bill Hurt said. "This is our way of remembering them."
