The lawsuit Gov. George Allen filed this summer challenging one of the General Assembly's procedural rules will cost the legislature $150,000 in legal fees, a lawmaker said Tuesday.
House Speaker Thomas Moss said the bill covers the cost of four attorneys who defended the lawsuit for the General Assembly, and represents a 20 percent discount.
Allen's legal challenge was filed to test how much power governors have to amend or veto legislation. He argued that his line-item veto power was compromised when the General Assembly asked him to approve budget amendments without allowing him to consider the entire budget.
The state Supreme Court ruled against Allen. The governor was represented by the state attorney general's office.
