Emory & Henry College will again host the regional competition April 12. Students placing first or second in the junior division (grades 6-8) or senior division (9-12) will go on to state competition May 3 in Williamsburg. Top winners there will advance to national competition June 15-19 at the University of Maryland.
Prizes are awarded at all levels, including scholarships for national winners.
Emory & Henry is co-sponsoring the regional competition with the Virginia Society of History Teachers for the district covering the Virginia counties from Bland, Wythe and Grayson west to Lee and including the cities of Bristol and Norton.
In each division, there are seven categories providing for individual and group projects ranging from written papers to dramatic performances and electronic presentations. Categories are individual papers and both individual and group projects, performances and media presentations.
Participants must complete a pre-registration form and pay a $4 registration fee by April 4, when individual papers must be submitted. Forms and further information are available from district coordinator John Roper, professor of history, or Thomas Little, assistant professor of history, at Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va. 24327.
