A single-engine airplane ran out of fuel and crashed Saturday just south of the Charlottesville-Albermarle Airport, sending three people to the hospital, state police said.
The plane ran out of fuel about one-tenth of a mile from the runway, according to Trooper Bob Davis. The pilot, Barry Joye, 35, of Lake City, Fla., mistakenly believed he had enough fuel to reach the airport.
Joye was able to glide the Cessna 210 over some power lines and into a pasture short of the runway around 2 p.m.
Three of the six people on board were taken to the University of Virginia Hospital. One was treated for minor injuries and released. The other two, both pregnant, were under observation Saturday evening.
The plane was en route to Leesburg from Greenville, S.C., Davis said.
