AYERSMAN, Robert Allen, (``Boomer""), 58, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. He was a Hall of Fame graduate of Virginia Tech, a long-time teacher and coach at Roanoke Catholic and currently employed with the City of Salem Parks & Recreation Department. Surviving are three sons, Jay Ayersman of Salem, Jeff Ayersma n of Raleigh, N.C., Chad Ayersman of Roanoke; one grandchild, Nicole Ayersman of Roanoke. A funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 12 noon Tuesday, with the Rev. Randy Rule and the Rev. Joe Metzger officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrews Diocesan Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the St. Andrews Catholic Building Fund or the Salem Sports Foundation. BEASLEY, Hester Edith Edmonds, 92, of Austinville, passed away Sunday, December 15, 1996 at her home. She was born March 1, 1904. She is survived by one son, Marvin Beasley of Hillsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Alene and Harold Myers of Austinville; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 1995, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, Va. Interment in Beasley Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, December 16, 1996, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville.

BLAIR, Elsie Jacobs, 98, of Sandy Level, died Sunday, December 15, 1996. Born on November 7, 1898, in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Tilton Jacobs and Nannie Bell Huffmond Jacobs. She was married to the late Paul Blair. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Pauline B. Kepley; granddaughter, Cheryl B. Arthur; two brothers, Gorman W. Jacobs and Lowry O. Jacobs, and two sisters, Claudia J. Almond and Reba J. Flick. She was the oldest member of Liberty Christian Church. She was a good and faithful wife for 67 years, and a wonderful, loving mother. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Odell and Gladys Blair of Sandy Level and Gordon Ray and Barbara Blair of Troutville; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mozelle and William Obenshain, Nannie Bell Aliff, Gertrude and William Trussler and Jean David of Roanoke; a son-in-law, Alvin Kepley of Stevensville, Md.; one brother, Emmett L. Jacobs of Roanoke; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Liberty Christian Church by Wayne Grinnell, minister. Interment will follow in Liberty Memorial Cemetery. CARTER, Glen Delaney, 63, of Henry, died Saturday, December 14, 1996. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Grover W. and Ida Martin Carter, and two brothers, Paul and Wayne Carter. Surviving are his wife, Patricia (``Pat"") Carter of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Mike McCaul of Siler City, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Ruth Carter of Henry, and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Bernice Johnson of Ferrum, Betty and Leonard Hylton of Vinton, and Irene and Milton Bowles, and Jewel and Wayne Bussey, all of Rocky Mount. CARTER, Jessie Mae Garner, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lester Carter; son, Lawrence R. Carter; six brothers, and one sister. She is survived by a grandson and spouse, John Lawrence and Barbara Carter of Philadelphia, Pa., and a great-granddaughter, Crystal Carter of Philadelphia. Also surviving are 28 nieces and nephew s, including Shirley Garner Fulp and C. Larry Fulp of Roanoke. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 1996, in Evergreen Burial Park, with the Rev. Jim Foringer officiating. CONTOS, Virginia Vitsa, 98, of Fayetteville, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 15, 1996. She was the widow of Gus A. Contos. Mrs. Contas was preceded in death by a son, Athanasios Contos, two daughters, Bessie C. Salvatore and Ethel C. Parrous. Mrs. Contos came to Roanoke in 1919 from Voulpi, Evrytania Greece, with her husband, residing in Roanoke until 1954. She was a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Fayetteville, N.C. and a former member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. She was a member of Philoptochos Society and the Daughters of Evrytania. In her many years, she was a loving mother, grandmother and faithful worker of her church. Mrs. Contos is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Katherine C. Roupas, Charlotte, N.C., Helen C. and James P. Poulos, Roanoke, Mary K. Rucker, Roanoke, Bertha C. Contos, Fayetteville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. CUNDIFF, Sally Wagner, 75, of Route 4, Bassett, went to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, December 14, 1996. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed. Surviving are her husband, Cur tis Giles Cundiff; three sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew Curtis and Margaret Cundiff, Newton, N.C., Terry Robert and Donna Cundiff, Ridgeway, Paul McKinley and Karen Cundiff, Richmond; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Gail and Donald Smith, Sylvia Louise and John Bussey, all of Rocky Mount; nine grandchildren; one sister, Annie McAlexander, Ferrum. Bor n on May 13, 1964, she was a daughter of Nadean Turman of Dugspur and the late Jerry Clontz. ETHERIDGE, Almina Ferrell, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 15, 1996. She was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Chesapeake. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Benjamin A. Etheridge. She is survived by two daughters, Julie E. Cooke of Roanoke and Amanda S. Baum of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and other loving relatives and friends. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to medical science. HOBSON, Raymond Albert, 82, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. Mr. Hobson was a member of Belmont Baptist Church. He retired from Union Carbide with 45 years of service, and was Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Worley Hobson; son, Timothy R. Hobson; brothers and sister-in-law, Melvin and Berkley Hobson, and Clyde Hobson, and sister-in-law, Christine Manspile. HYDE, Emily Redmond, of 143 5th St., N.W., Pulaski, died Saturday, December 14, 1996 in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born in Mayodan, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Philip Yandie Redmond and Virginia Wimbush Redmond. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Zimmerman Hyde and her son, Dr. Perry Hyde. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. LAMANCA, John, Sr., 91, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. Mr. Lamanca was a native of Bluefield, W.Va., where he attended and graduated from Bluefield College. In addition, he attended the Medical College of Virginia and later the School of Pharmacy at West Virginia University. Upon graduation, he returned to Bluefield, W.Va., where he was owner in a number of drug stores. In 1956, John and family moved to Roanoke, Va., where he accepted the position of Manager at Garland's Drug Store. He retired from Garland's Drug Stores in the early 1970s. One of his proudest moments was induction into the Sports Hall of Fame at Bluefield College in 1992. He actively participated in football, track and boxing as a team member. John was also a member of several civic and professional organizations, including the Masons, Kiwanas, the Moose and 300 Club. John attended First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Bible Book Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Barksdale Lamanca, and his grandson, John David Lamanca. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Biggs Lamanca; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Sandra Scott; sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Shirley Lamanca, Jim and Sherry Lamanca, Sam and Shirl Lamanca, and L arry Lamanca; grandchildren, Debbie and Allen Wilkerson, Todd Lamanca, Jennifer and Whitney Lamanca, and Tracy Scott; great-grandchildren, Jayson Lamanca, Lindsey Wilkerson and Preston Lamanca; sisters-in-law, Eva Mitchell, and Isabel and husband, Jim Beamer; brother-in-law, Sidney Shires and wife, Opal; nieces, Betty Davis and Kathy Prillaman, and nephews, Danny Thomas, Larry Mitchell, Ronald and Timothy Mitchell, Leon and Jackie White, and Steven and Scott Shires. QUESENBERRY, Rev. Roy Pierce, 89, of Dublin, passed away Sunday morning, December 15, 1996, in Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was a retired Pentecostal Holiness Church minister, and was a faithful member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Radford. He was the son of the late Pierce Quesenberry and Lillie Cox Quesenberry Roop. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eula Elizabeth Rupe Quesenberry; three daughters and a son-in-law, Lelia Q. and Larry Cugini of Atlanta, Ga., Dorothy Q. Thompson of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ruth Q. Akers of Dublin; two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Glennard and Dorothy M. Quesenberry of Blacksburg, and Clarence W. and Annabelle S. Quesenberry of Dublin; three sisters, Ilene R. Crigler and Dean R. Morris of Radford, and Evelyn R. Lasher of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; four brothers, Barney Quesenberry of Glendale, Ariz., Vinson Quesenberry of Shawsville, Wiley Quesenberry of Radford and Walter Quesenberry of Vallejo, Calif.; two stepsisters, Virginia Dowell of Abingdon and Frances Bowyer of Christiansburg; one stepbrother, Hobert Roop of Dugspur; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. RUCKER, Isabelle Pettit, widow of Albon McDaniel Rucker, Jr., died Saturday, December 14, 1996. Mrs. Rucker was born on June 5, 1918, the fifth child and only daughter of William Albert Claude and Gerdena Sherman Pettit. She was educated at home by her mother at Frederi ck's Hall Elementary School and Mineral High School in Louisa County. From there, she went to Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, where in 1939, she earned a BA Degree in Latin. She went to Arlington, Va. to teach, where she met, and in 1941, married Mack Rucker. In 1948 the Ruckers sold their interest in Furniture, Inc. and moved back to Louisa County, where they bought Bear's Den Farm. They raised cattle and she taught mathematics at Louisa County High School. In 1958 she applied for and was granted participantship in the National Science Foundation's first Academic Year Institute in Mathematics at the University of Virginia, where earned a MED. Degree in mathematics and was offered the position of State Supervisor of Mathematics by the Virginia Department of Education -- the first of its kind in Virginia. She remained in this position until 1973, when the General Assembly of Virginia created the first Governor's School for the Gifted in the Commonwealth. She was appointed the school's first State Director, a position she held for seven years, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Rucker co-authored a set of mathematics textbooks and was active in numerous organizations relative to her work. She held committee chairmanships of several national committees. She received many academic accolades, including the first recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in Mathematics Education given by the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She was honored by Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1984 with membership in Phi Beta Kappa and named one of three alumnae to be recipient of the Alumnae Achievement Award in 1986. Her non-academic interests included membership in the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, the Riverside Garden Club, and Ikebana of Richmond. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, golf, entertaining, and needlework. Mrs. Rucker was preceded in death by four of her five brothers, W. A. C. Pettit, Jr., C. Pembroke Pettit, Milton C. Pettit and Sherman W. Pettit. Survivors include a brother, Overton Baker Pettit of Alabama; three nephews, William Albert Claude Pettit, III, Pembroke Robert Pettit, both of Louisa County, Overton Baker Pettit, Jr. of Florida; three nieces, Anita Pettit Huxley of Alabama, Martha Bailey Pettit Wilson of Danville, Margaret Gerdena Pettit of Florida; and several great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec ember 18, 1996, at Seventh Street Christian Church, 4101 Grove Avenue, Richmond, with interment at 3 p.m. in the Bethpage Christian Church Cemetery at Frederick's Hall, Louisa County -- the church in which the Ruckers were married, she taught Sunday School in her youth and where Mr. Rucker is buried. SMITH, Samuel William, Sr., 65, of Lexington, died Saturday, December 14, 1996. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel W. Smith Jr. and Rhonda Smith of Buchanan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Delores S. and Doug Seal of Covington, Donna S. and Dennis Painter of Buchanan, and Kathy S. and Roger Bryant of Roanoke; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Oscar P. and Patricia Smith of Lexington, Ollie A. and Mary Smith of Roanoke, Albert L. and Joyce Smith, Stewart B. and Phyllis Smith, and Henry W. and Bessie Smith, all of Glasgow, and Calvin (``Johnny"") Smith of Lexington; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Pauline S. Kelly of Lexington, Norma S. and Garland Austin of Glasgow, and Barbara (``Judy"") and Ralph Stevenson of Natural Bridge; 10 grandchildren, and a good friend, Mr. Harlow of Buchanan. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 1996, at the Rader Buchanan Chapel, with the Rev. Barton L. Hellmuth officiating. Interment will follow in the Rapps Mill Cemetery. STARR, Julian C., Sr., 89, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. He was preceded in death by Lois K. Starr and Ruth A. Starr, also nine brothers and two sisters. Mr. Starr was a member and Deacon at Enon Baptist Church, a retired Department Manager for the Noland Company, a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163 AF&AM and the Shrine Temple. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Julian C. Starr, Jr. and Mary, of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn S. and Dr. Frank M. Johnson of Roanoke; grandchildren, Susan and Shelton Parsons, Traci Starr, Chad Starr, Toni Bowler and Scott Updike; great-grandchildren, Seth Parsons, Lindsay Parsons, Megan Parsons, and Hunter Bowler; and his extended and loving family at the Brian Center. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel 3 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Ray E. Frazier officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, with Masonic Rites by the Williamson Road Lodge #163 AF&AM. WEBSTER, Ina Gladys, 85, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, December 15, 1996 in Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. The widow of the late Rodney Milton Webster, she is s urvived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald D. and Anna Webster, Christiansburg; two brothers, Joe Reed, Orlando, Fla., Harry Reed, Strausburg, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Winnie Kenny of California; four grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Patricia Webster of South Carolina, Ronald David, Jr. and Sharon Webster, Peter A. and DeLisa Webster, all of Christiansburg, Angela L. and Patrick Ault of Georgia; great-granddaughters, Nicole Webster, Amanda Webster. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 1996, at the North Fork Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Fred Brugger, with burial in the North Fork Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the services. WILLIAMS, George Edward, 64, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, December 14, 1996. He was born in Roanoke to the late George Franklin Williams and Mary Morgan Williams. He is survived by his wife, Hannah Grogan Williams; daughter, Vanessa Williams (Harry) Yancey; one beloved grandson, Shane Edward Michael Yancey; one brother and sister-in-law, Harry L. (Gwen) Morgan Jr.; four sisters, Dorothy Morgan, Gladys W. Padgett, Helen Williams and Mary (Clarence) Ismay; two aunts, Lottie Morgan and Lilly Morgan; one great-aunt, Alfreda Wright; one uncle, Herman Williams; a host of loving and devoted nieces and nephews, cousins, as well as a large body of friends and loved ones. He was a longtime devoted of First Baptist Church (North Jefferson Street), where he served as a trustee. He retired from General Electric Company on May 1, 1980, and was an active and respected member of the community. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, North Jefferson Street, at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 19, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Wright officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. Arrangements by Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
