ROANOKE STAR WINS SOCCER TITLES

Two Roanoke Star girls' soccer teams won titles at the Thunder Mountain Winter Indoor Classic in Boone, N.C., on Sunday.

The Under-10 team won the Classic division on points, with three victories and one loss. The U-12 White team was split into two squads, which reached the final with unbeaten records. Carlie Smith's goal in the second sudden-death overtime period was the only goal scored.

In other sports news in the region:

Charlie Davies and Steve Cromer qualified for junior nationals in swimming with times they posted during the Gamecock Christmas Invitational in Columbia, S.C., over the weekend.

Davies finished the 100-yard breast stroke in 59.31 seconds during a time trial, while Cromer, a Carter Center Aquatics teammate, qualified in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke.

Other event winners included Tommy Rappold in the 13-14 boys' 100 butterfly, Jamie Trivett in the 13-14 girls' 50 and 100 freestyles and Lindsay Hock in the 11-12 girls' 200 freestyle.

``Hurricane'' Harry Cunningham of Roanoke won a three-round decision over previously unbeaten Mike Thomas of Johnson City, Tenn., on Saturday in the bout of the night on the Winter War card at Valley Center. Cunningham (3-0) was impressive in his super heavyweight victory over Thomas (3-1) to highlight a 12-bout card before a crowd of about 600 people.
