Roanoke City Council has taken a step toward solving holiday traffic snarls around Valley View Mall, but shoppers will have to wait at least two more Christmases before they see major improvements.
By a 7-0 vote, council approved a $500,000 contract for design work and engineering of an interchange south of the mall that ultimately will allow motorists to bypass busy Hershberger Road.
The contract went to Mattern & Craig Inc. of Roanoke. The design and engineering of the interchange will take at least six months and maybe as many as nine, Public Works Director Bill Clark told council.
The interchange is designed to relieve increased traffic on Hershberger Road that has resulted from the opening early this year of a Wal-Mart superstore adjacent to the mall.
City taxpayers are picking up the total cost, which is estimated at $5 million.
