IN HONOR OF THEIR GOOD NEIGHBORS

Ned and Karen Wisnefske and their children, 6-year-old Gwen and 9-year-old Jack, made a donation to the Good Neighbors Fund in honor of their Raleigh Court neighbors, Stretch and Phyllis Stephens.

The Wisnefskes moved to Roanoke about eight years ago from Wisconsin, where their families still live, so the Stephenses became "surrogate grandparents, even going to Grandparents Day at school with the children," Karen said.

Phyllis Stephens, a widow who had lived in the neighborhood about 20 years, met Stretch, a retired Navy chaplain, about three years ago. The neighbors noticed his car parked in front of her house and began keeping a sharp eye on "their precious Phyllis." When Stretch eventually popped the question and married Phyllis, "it was a package deal; he got the whole neighborhood," Karen said.

"Everyone on the entire street was invited to the wedding, from toddlers to 80-year-olds."

"We are truly blessed to have such wonderful, caring people live across the street from us," Karen wrote in a note accompanying their check to the Good Neighbors Fund.
