Nyree Roberts led four Old Dominion scorers in double figures, contributing 19 points, as the Monarchs stunned top-ranked Stanford 83-66 on Tuesday night in women's basketball.
Fourth-ranked ODU (8-1), playing host to the nation's No.1 team for the first time in 12 years, is 3-1 in games against top-ranked opponents. The Monarchs beat top-ranked Louisiana Tech at Old Dominion Field House in 1982 and 1984.
Stanford (9-1) was denied its third 10-0 start. The first two, in 1990 and 1992, ended with the Cardinal winning NCAA championships.
Ticha Penichiero and Clarisse Machanguana added 16 points each and Aubrey Eblin 12 had for ODU. Penichiero also had 10 assists, and Machanguana added eight rebounds and six assists, the assists matching a career high.
Kate Starbird paced the Cardinal with 17 points, Jamila Wideman had 12 and Olympia Scott 10.
The Monarchs played ball-hawking defense all night, frustrating Stanford by filling passing lanes and repeatedly swatting balls free. The Cardinal had 28 turnovers and allowed ODU 23 offensive rebounds.
Stanford trailed by 17 with 5:46 left, then scored seven consecutive points to briefly quiet the sellout crowd of 4,855. A 9-2 run by the Monarchs revved them up again, though, and the game ended amid chants of ``We're Number One'' before many in the crowd came onto the court at the buzzer.
