AKERS, Husten Charles, 71, of Radford, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996, in the Catawba Hospital. Surviving are two brothers, Sherman Akers, Roanoke, Oscar Akers, Radford; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 19, at the graveside in the Akers Family Cemetery, Rt. 114, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Glisson. CHAPPELLE, Helen Frances Nichols, (``Granny""), 64, of Salem, formerly of Bedford, passed away Monday, December 16, 1996 in a Salem convalescent center. She was the widow of James I. Chappelle. Surviving are her children, Joyce Ann Jennings, Buchanan, Frances Marie Paxton, Moneta, James I. Chappelle Jr., Salem, Connie Karen Tate, Rustburg, Mary J. Chesser, Salem; ten grandchildren; two sisters, Gertie Little, Abingdon, Agnes Jefferson, Lynchburg; four brothers, George Nichols, David Nichols, and Gene Nichols all of Bedford, Junior Nichols, Lynchburg, and Roger Nichols, Tampa, Fla. CHILDRESS, Mamie Lucille Stevens Sifford, 85, of Fincastle, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996. Mrs. Childress was the widow of Ira W. Sifford and E. Ryland Childress. She was a life-long member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, serving as Trustee and in various offices of the church. Mrs. Childress was a graduate of Hollins College and was a teacher in the Botetourt County, Roanoke County and Roanoke City School Systems for over 40 years. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dan Schofield, Locust Grove; granddaughters, Sally Kenyon and Susan Barnes; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 19, 1996, at 1:30 p.m. in the Mill Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. James F. George, Jr. and the Rev. Marsha L. Davidson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mill Creek Cemetery. CHOCKLETT, Jerry R., (``Rob''), 82, of Vinton, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 1996. Mr. Chocklett was an active member of the Vinton Weslyan Church for 35 years. He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad with 33 years service in 1975. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the 29th Infantry Division in Germany, and a current member of the VFW Post 4522, Vinton. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alien Shilling Chocklett; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Rita Chocklett, Roanoke, Carl (Butch) and Cathy Chocklett, Roanoke County, Paul and Diane Chocklett, Goodview; four daughters and sons-in-law, Maybelle and George Wickham, Roanoke County, Marie and Doras Weddle, Roanoke, Ruby and Larry Boone, Boones Mill, Patsy and Mike Turner, Botetourt County; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Idabell Wirchniansky, Fairfield, Calif. Funeral services will be at the Vinton Weslyan Church, 1 p.m. Friday, December 20, 1996, with Dr. Flavy Brown, Tom Wade and the Rev. Irvin Sloan officiating. CONNER, Elva Mae, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, December 16, 1996. She was the widow of Jess L. Conner and was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Belle Blankenship, and a son, Thomas Junior Blankenship. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond E. and Betty J. Blankenship, Roanoke; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Elsie Parrish, Cora Jane Lephew, both of Elliston, Laura Wade, Salem, Isabell Conner, Roanoke; two brothers, Ed Melton, and Frank Melton, both of Elliston; and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 1996 at the Little Hope Cemetery in Elliston with the Rev. John Chambers officiating. COVINGTON, Clayton Whitt, 84, of Vinton, died Monday, December 16, 1996 at his home. He was retired from the N&W Railroad. He was preceded in death by two sons, Joe Covington, and David Covington. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Carroll Cov ington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Bobby Barton, Becky and Richard Ingram, both of Vinton; four sisters and brothers-in-laws, Reva C. Mrs. Creasey was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Creasey. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Andy Price of Salem, Wanda and Randy Turner of Daleville, and Brenda Taylor and fiance Greg Hundley of Richmond, and three grandchildren, Stephanie Taylor, and Shawn and Michelle Price.
