WILLIAM BYRD LAYS IT ON LINE

William Byrd took advantage of its trips to the free-throw line to hold off Lord Botetourt 62-55 on Tuesday night in the Blue Ridge District opener for both boys' teams.

William Byrd made 18 of 30 free throws in the game. Lord Botetourt went 0-for-5.

The Terriers (3-1) got 15 points from Kevin Stump, and three players - Mayo Wilson, Josh Wheeler and Jason Bailey - scored 11 apiece.

Michael Yates led the Cavaliers (4-1) with 14 points and Hugh Arendall added 10.

Parry McCluer 48, Glenvar 40: The Fighting Blues (5-0) remained unbeaten with a non-district victory, thanks to 16-for-21 marksmanship at the free-throw line.

Glenvar (1-4), led by Josh Williamson's game-high 19 points, was 4-of-7 from the line. Chip Coleman paced the visitors from Buena Vista with 13 points.

Christiansburg 46, Northside 44: Andy Phillips didn't start, but he certainly finished for the Blue Demons, hitting a running jumper with 1.5 seconds left to give visiting Christiansburg a victory over the Vikings in the Blue Ridge opener for both teams.

Northside (0-3) had a 10-point first-quarter lead, but the Blue Demons (5-0) rallied with an 18-point second quarter.

Michael Kazee had 17 points and Eric Lucas 14 - nine of those on a perfect night at the free-throw line. Nat Franklin was the Vikings' only double-figure scorer.

Craig County 44, Shawsville 43: Mike Fisher scored 15 points to lead the Rockets (1-3) to a non-district victory over the Shawnees (0-4) in New Castle.

With his team trailing 43-41, Ben Elmore hit a field goal and was fouled with four seconds left in the game. Elmore hit the free throw to give the Rockets a one-point victory.

Larry Smith led the Shawnees with 11 points.

James River 74, Covington Boys' Home 66: Quincy Springs led a quintet of double-figure scorers as the Knights held off the Indians in Covington.

Springs scored 17 points, Joey Ingram had 13, Travis Blankenship and Phil Meter had 12 each and Will Goad contributed 10 for James River (3-4).

Mike White led Covington Boys' Home with 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Chris Hampton had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Girls

Cave Spring 78, George Washington-Danville 42: The Knights (2-0) rolled to an impressive road victory, handing the the Eagles their first loss in five games.

Cave Spring had three double-figure scorers, led by Amy Causey with 18 points.

William Fleming 72, Patrick Henry 18: Shaunarey Walker scored 19 points for the Colonels in a Roanoke Valley District rout of the Patriots at the Salem Civic Center.

Fleming (4-2, 1-0) outscored PH 28-3 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Kiann Trent contributed 15 points and Renita Walker added 11 for the Colonels.

Tanisha Durham led the Patriots (3-3, 0-1) with eight points.
