First, the Lyric Theatre in downtown Blacksburg. Now, the Pulaski Theatre is seeking support from local legislators for state funds to help finance the theater's renovation.
The theater is just one of the Pulaski projects that local officials will be lobbying for when the General Assembly convenes in January.
The Pulaski Town Council voted to ask the legislature for funds to expand its Train Station Museum as well as renovate the Pulaski Theatre into a civic auditorium.
Both town and county governing bodies have been meeting with state legislators on issues for the upcoming session. State Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville, met Monday night with the county Board of Supervisors. State Sen. Malfourd "Bo" Trumbo, R-Fincastle, and Del. Tommy Baker, R-Dublin, attended sessions Tuesday with Pulaski Town Council and the county School Board.
The Pulaski Town Council voted formally to seek funds for the museum and theater. The museum will become a terminus for the New River Trail State Park when it is extended two miles into town over a route to be designated, so rest rooms and other visitor facilities would be needed. Space is also needed to house a 1,700-square-foot display of a scale model railroad offered to the museum by Milton Brockmeyer of Pulaski.
The expansion could either be at the depot site or across the street by renovating the now-closed Skate Center building in the Maple Shade Shopping Center.
In Blacksburg, Del. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg, last week agreed to ask the legislature for $50,000 in historic-preservation funds to renovate the town's historic Lyric Theatre.
