AKERS, Husten Charles, 71, of Radford, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the graveside in the Akers Family Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Glisson. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne in Christiansburg.

BEDWELL, Garnett Dean, 84, of Ivanhoe, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Carroll County, the son of the late Ellis and Lucy Cox Bedwell. He was a member of the Iva Lodge #173 IOOF, and was preceded in death by a son, Earl Bedwell. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alma G. Bedwell of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Charles Settino of Chicago, Ill., Glenda and Stanley Martin of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Jerry Bedwell of Salem, Joseph and Cornelia Bedwell of Rocky Mount, Donald and Sharon Bedwell of Mentor, Ohio. Eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 20, 1996, at 1 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taz Reid and Mr. Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Iva Lodge #173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, will conduct graveside rites. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. The family will receive friends at the Reese Funeral Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.
BENNETT, Arthur 76 of Roanoke died December 17, 1996. He was formerly of New York, N.Y. Mr. Bennett was the beloved husband of the late Ruth Bennett and father of the late Arthur Bennett, Jr. Mr. Bennett was a retired Lt. Col. with the U.S. Army serving in Europe in World War II and a retired New York City Police officer. Surviving are his daughter, Deborah Bennett of East Hampton, N.Y.; devoted sister-in-law, Alma Johnson of Roanoke. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's South Chapel. BOND, Lillian Josephine, 69, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 14, 1996. CAMPER, Jimmie Rudolph, 80, of Buchanan, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996. Jimmie was a life-long resident of the Buchanan community and was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church. He had retired in 1994 from the Botetourt County School System after 32 years as Head Custodian at James River High School. It was early in his work there that he picked up the nickname ``George'' and was affectionately called that by students over the years, many of whom did not know it wasn't his name. Jimmie took great pride in everything he did, not the least of which was gardening. His tomato patch always came up in summertime conversations-but then only if it didn't conflict with his favorite TV shows. Jimmie was a loving husband to Ruth for 55 years and an inspiring father to Rhudy. He will be greatly missed by them, and all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Sprinkle Camper; son and daughter-in-law, Rhudy and Cathy Camper, Forest. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 20, 1996, at 2 p.m. in the Mill Creek Baptist Church with Rev. James F. George Jr. and Rev. Marsha L. Davidson officiating. CARTER, Geneva Mae, 80, of Route 1, Bedford, died Wednesday, December 18, 1996 at Carillion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Leesville, Va. on October 11, 1916 a d aughter of the late Joel Wilkes and Mamie Creasey Wilkes. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Morris Carter and her son, Alfred W. Carter. She was a member of the former Smith Mountain Tabernacle. She is survived by three sons, James V. Carter, Johnny L. Carter, and Douglas W. Carter all of Bedford; two daughters, Janice G. Nichols of Woodbridge, Linda F. Carter of Roanoke; two half sisters, Virginia Seamster of Lynch Station and Mary Kay Jenkins of Huddleston; three stepsisters, Nina, Frances and Lois; a stepbrother, Richard; also 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. HOLLIDAY, William Ray, (``Bill''), 64, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born August 17, 1932 in Anjean, W.Va. He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War, and a long-time employee of the Electro-Tech Corporation. Mr. Holliday was preceded in death by his father, Robert A. Holliday; a sister, Barbara Carmichael; and a brother, Donald ``Ducky'' Holliday. He was a beloved father and husband to his surviving wife, Cecile D. Holliday; a daughter and special friend, Renee Holliday Constantinides and David Carter, both of Arlington; a son and special friend, William Kevin Holliday, Christiansburg, and Denise Lemon, Alexandria; his mother, Ora M. Holliday, Blacksburg; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jerry and Melvin Brammer, Roanoke, and Genevieve and Richard Lockwood, Blacksburg. HURST, Annie Lancaster, 94, of Richmond, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996. Mrs. Hurst was a native of Roanoke and a lifetime member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and was retired from Roa noke Photo Finishing after 42 years of service. She was preceded in death by a sister, Perrinne (Jo) Lancaster Wood and was the widow of G. Willis Hurst. Surviving are a brother, William Mead Lancaster, Glen Ferris, W.Va.; a niece and husband, Jo Wood and Charles G. Baggett, Richmond; a niece, Barbara L. Johnson, Westfield, N.J.; nephews, James L. KNOX, Thomas Bayly, 74, of 1025 Virginia Ave., Suffolk, died Tuesday, December 17, 1996. A native of Glen Osborne, Pa., he was a son of the late Elmslie Higginbotham and Eleanor Lippincott Knox. Mr. Knox, retired Suffolk District Manager of Virginia Power, was active in many civic endeavors. He was a member of the Suffolk Rotary Club, a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, the Suffolk United Way and past chairman of the local board of Paul D. Camp Community College. He participated on the boards of the Red Cross and the Old Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the Navy in World War II, and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Bettie Burks Knox of Bedford; four sons, Marshall Knox of Bedford, James Knox of Chesapeake, Thomas Knox of Suffolk, Frank Knox of Greenville, N.C.; five grandchildren; a brother, John Knox of Richmond; five sisters, Flora K. Plumbo of Venice, Fla., Eleanor Plumbo of St. Simons Island, Ga., Norma Weber of Fairlawn, N.J., Elmslie Swiers and Nancy Knox, both of Somers Point, N.J. Memorial services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Rev. H. Vance Man III. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker and Co. TAYLOR, James Henry, (``Josh""), 86, of Roanoke, died Monday, December 16, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor S. Taylor; parents, Reese and Maude Taylor; two sisters. He is survived by one niece and four nephews. Mr. Taylor was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and Virginia Military Institute in 1934.
