CLAYTOR, Harriett Bowman, of Radford, about noon, Wednesday, December 18,1996, took her place in the silent halls of death. She was born February 16, 1924 to the union of the late James S. and Cornelia D. Bowman of Lynchburg, Va. After completing her Elementary and Secondary Education in Lynchburg, she entered Virginia State College ( now University). Here, she earned a B.S. degree in Health and Physical Education. While working at Rustburg County High School, Rustburg, Va., she became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and married Roy R. Claytor. After being awarded the M.S. degree by George Williams College, Chicago, Ill., she worked the next eighteen years in Institutions of Higher Learning in Mississippi, Louisiana and Virginia. In 1974 she came to Radford with her husband. Here she completed the requirements for a M.S. degree in Upper Elementary Education at Radford College (now University). She was an active member of New Mount Olive United Methodist Church on Russell Avenue, until illness prevented her attendance. While active, she participated in Bible Study and the Women's Christian Service. Her survivors include her husband, Roy R. Claytor, Radford; one brother James Bowman (Sarah), Baltimore, Md.; one brother-in-law, Nathan Watson, Lynchburg; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frances H. Bowman, Lynchburg and Mrs. Joyce Y. Bowman, Washington, D.C.; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the New Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Russell Avenue, Radford, Va. CUMMINGS, Woodson Stillman, 89, of 616 North Jefferson Avenue, Pulaski, died Thursday, December 19, 1996, in Highland Manor Nursing Home. Born on January 13, 1907, in Riner, he was the son of the late Lonnie Allen Cummings and Lillian Thompson Cummings. He was a retired businessman of nearly 60 years in the Pulaski area, serving on the Pulaski Town Council for 12 years. He served as Chairman of the Select Service Board for 25 years. He had been active in clubs and organizations such as the Lions Club, 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the New River Valley Shrine Club and the Elks Lodge. He was a lifetime member of the Crippled Childrens Hospital in Greenville, S.C. He was an active member of First Christian Church, where he was a Deacon Emeritus and trustee. He was preceded in death by his son, Frederic L. Cummings. He is survived by his wife, Colleen Seagle Cummings. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Thomas M. Seagle & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Donald Scott and the Rev. Norman Witthuhn officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. FITZGERALD, John D. Jr. 70, of Roanoke, passed away at his home Wednesday, December 18, 1996, after a lengthy illness. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from the Norfolk Southern Railway after 44 years of service. Mr. Fitzgerald was an avid and celebrated fisherman. He was a member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Donald Fitzgerald Sr. and Daisy Wright Fitzgerald; two brothers, Leslie G. Fitzgerald and Fred B. Fitzgerald. Mrs. Smiley had been employed by Burlington Industries as a secretary for fifteen years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Smiley. He was born in Roanoke in 1924 and was educated at Episcopal High School, Washington & Lee University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as a physician in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and practiced as an Internist in Roanoke for 39 years. Dr. Winborne was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Roanoke Academy of Medicine, and was a long-time member and past president of the Rushlight Club. He was also a member of the Medical Society of Virginia. Dr. Winborne is survived by his wife, Lee; his daughter Susan Parochniak and her children, Mya and Emma, of Lexington; his son, Roger M. Winborne, III and his wife, Carolyn, of Roanoke; and his daughter Kathy Linkswiler, and her husband, Mark and their children, David, Luke, and Matthew Linkswiler of Charlottesville. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 1996, at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at St. John's Episcopal Church in the chapel on Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund, the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, or the Medical Aid Program International (MAP).
WITT, Cary Wells, 88, of Thaxton, died Wednesday, December 18, 1996, at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on July 20, 1908, a son of the late James David Witt and Louella Alice Craghead Witt. He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Folden Witt, and a so n, Coy M. Witt. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jeraldine W. and James E. Crouch; a grandson, Wayne E. Crouch; a great-granddaughter, Cassandra N. Crouch; two sisters, Makie W. Brown and Edna W. Reed, all of Thaxton; a daughter-in-law, Irene Witt of Roanoke, and four stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 1996, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with Albert D. Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
